Interview: Katie Cassidy on NYFW #Hot2Adopt Feline Fashion Show & The Modern Cat Lady

This past week I was lucky enough to catch Katie Cassidy, star of CW’s Arrow and The Flash, between shows and speak to her about her NYFW Hot to Adopt Feline Fashion Show and Lounge with Fresh Step. In addition to a feline-inspired fashion show, complete with cats on the runway, the Hot to Adopt lounge also offered attendees an exclusive opportunity to adopt their very own feline right there!

More information about the exclusive Hot to Adopt tee (as seen on Katie) after the interview:

The NYC Talon: Can you tell me a little bit about your Hot to Adopt Feline Fashion Lounge with Fresh Step, what can we expect?

Katie Cassidy: Yes, so you can expect feline inspired looks which I think is fun. I’ll be hosting the Hot to Adopt Feline Fashion event and fashion show with Fresh Step and I think it’ll be fun, I think it’ll be interesting. Obviously it’s for a good cause and you can actually purchase this shirt [pictured above, more details below] at and part of it will go toward helping cat shelters all over the country, which is such a great cause and I’m excited to do it. I’m excited to see what people will wear, and actually we’ll be having cats walking down the runway which will be fun, yeah it’ll be very cute.

TNT: So I saw your post on TKC [Katie’s blog, post seen here], are cat ears something we’re going to see on the runway?

KC: Yeah, I certainly think so, I probably will wear some. I know there’ll be cat accessories that are very feline inspired, and it’ll be fun to bring that sort of awareness to people and get rid of that sort of crazy cat lady stigma. So we’ll be taking fashion and felines and sort of turning that stigma around. I actually just bought this clutch will a little cat face, it’s very cute.

TNT: Yes – I just saw that Kate Spade’s fall accessories have this adorable cat icon!

KC: Yeah and I just got this jacket from Stella McCartney that has this cat print all over it!

TNT: That sounds awesome. So, I know you have a cat…

KC: I do

TNT: And I think you have a dog, I’ve seen tweets with Felicia –

KC: [Laughs] To be honest with you I just love animals, and Felicia is my dog that I actually co-own with our stylist we have on Arrow, our hairstylist. Because when I travel, it’s hard when you have a dog or a cat, but a cat, obviously they can take care of themselves – but not for too long! But you can’t really leave a dog at home. Yeah, she’s been really fun.

TNT: I know you mentioned earlier about the cat lady stigma, what would you define as the ‘modern cat lady’?

KC: Hmm, the modern cat woman. Well, that’s what I think is so cool about this kind of thing because it’s bringing fashion and felines together and you have these, like as we saw on the cover of Porter magazine recently that there is a cat on the cover and I think adopting cats is more than just on trend, and we’re seeing them more on like cute clutches and shoes and it’s a sign of strong independent women. It’s something that’s cool, and again I love cats – actually [laughs] I want to get another one!

TNT: I’m a massive fan of your blog, are we going to see some What Katie Wore posts for Fashion Week?

KC: Yes! You certainly will, I have a photoshoot happening at some point tomorrow, I don’t know what time but yes you will.

TNT: Cats are kind of classified as lounging animals, if you have one day to absolutely lounge about and devote to rest & relaxation, what would you do?

KC: Everybody loves the spa, I feel like. Probably…I don’t know if I would just like have a relaxation day… I would probably go get a facial, or go to the gym, or not talk on the phone, or go on social media. I would probably just want to be by myself, you know? And order lots of pizza.

TNT: A girl after my own heart!

KC: Yeah – girl, pizza is my jam!

And that concludes my interview with Katie! She was so sweet, and I was very excited to interview her. She was in a rush, which was lucky otherwise I very well might have bombarded her with my embarrassing Arrow/The Flash Black Canary/Black Siren questions.

I love Fresh Step’s commitment to encouraging and celebrating cat ownership, and this tee is honestly adorable. But there’s more! All through the month of October Fresh Step wants you to step out and declare your love of modern cat ladies (and gentlemen too!) by declaring “Feline Fashion Fridays” – cat owners cat show their love of cats by posting a picture of themselves with their cat to Fresh Step’s Instagram using the #freshstepcontest hashtag each Friday for a chance to win free Fresh Step litter, a $250 VISA Gift Card, and the limited edition #hot2adopt T-shirt!

Backstage with Drew Noreen: Hair Styling Tips & Trends #NYFW #MBFW

This week, during New York Fashion Week I had the opportunity to chat with Not Your Mother’s lead stylist and consultant Drew Noreen backstage at the Style 360 Junk Food Vintage NFL Elements show curated by Kristin Cavallari.

I was able to ask him a few questions, and posted the interview on YouTube a few days ago – I’ve also transcribed it below, as there is a lot of background noise and somethings may be harder to hear. Be sure to read it through, or listen to the whole interview though because Drew has amazing advice for product picks and what styles you’ll want to look out for this season! Enjoy!

I noticed on your Instagram that you’re not a fan of the L’Oreal Feria Ombre hair coloring kit, what other at-home products do you think should be avoided?

There are other things, like at home smoothing treatments, [...] the at home highlight with the comb. Highlights are something we do at the salon, we place highlights in certain ways to accentuate your face, accentuate certain areas of the hair. You can make them hidden and more natural, you can place them right at the base and have them be more dramatic. Based on the size we’ll give you more of a natural feel, or more of a fun and funky feel – the thicker that you go. When you have an at home kit you’re just hoping that this comb is going to give it this even highlight feel. And what actually ends up happening is that you’ll get what we call “cheetah spots”, because as you’re combing it through it’s going to apply heavier at the root where you start, and as you move towards the bottom you might get an odd distribution of product. So you’ll wind up with some spots that are a little bit darker than others. And then, of course, the smoothing treatment era is huge right now and there are some at home kits that claim to do a smoothing treatment and you know – just put it in, comb it through, blow it out and you’re good to go. But really that’s als0 a very involved technical service, there’s a lot of things that can go wrong with that – you can break your hair off if you’re not doing it the proper way. So those sort of at-home do-it-yourself are definitely a no-go.

What are your top five styling essentials right now?

For tools, I definitely love that Not Your Mother’s just came out with this really cool tool here [Beach Babe 2-in-1 Expandable Styling System, seen below] where this actually snaps off and you’ve got this one as well. This one [Waving Iron] is actually really slim, so it’ll give you a really deep wave. Where this one [Bubble Wand] is going to give you a really tight wave, because you’re going to get a tighter curl here, and a looser curl here, which is what these shapes are meant to do. So I really like that styling tool at the moment.

Braids are huge. Braids are becoming very undone. You’ll noticed that it’s a french braid, but it’s pulled apart, it’s got texture, and it’s got flyaways. I tell a lot of my brides at the salon that we’re doing updo’s now for, that you kind of want those flyaways – it gives it a very soft, natural texture. We’re kind of moving away now from those kind of really sleek done coif styles.

Dry shampoo’s are really huge right now, especially now since a lot of women are getting into blow drying. Dry shampoo’s are going to dry you out an extra day or two, without keeping the hair greasy.

A heat protectant spray, that’s also huge because a lot of women are curling their hair now and there’s that infamous youtube video with the girl that burns her hair off with her curling iron – if you haven’t seen it, watch it! And that’s a perfect example of not prepping your hair properly and using the curling iron at too high of a heat. So you’re always going to want to get an iron that has a temperature adjustment – really you don’t need to go over 280 to 300 degrees. Going over that is when you’re risking damaging your hair.

A brush! Always a good brush! You want a brush that’s mixed with plastic and boar hair. The reason why is that the boar hair is going to smooth your hair and it’s going to help detangle the hair. It’s really really ideal for people that have finer texture whereas the plastic bristles are going to help give you a little bit more grip – and if you have thicker hair, it’s going to allow you to get more and brush more deeply at the same time and, again, you’re also controlling flyaways by using the boar hair.

Is there a question that you wish your clients would ask you?

I wish my clients would ask me for more detailed instructions on how to do their hair at home because thing that you always get is that “you do my hair at the salon, and I go home and can never do it myself”. I try to educate my clients as often as possible, I think a lot of them don’t take it in the right way because they challenge themselves in their mind that it’s going to be much more difficult than they expect; when if they really went home and tried it and took the advice they would probably find that it’s really easy to achieve the looks that they get in the salon at home. It all takes practice, I mean anything that you’re trying for the first time isn’t going to be the easiest. Like when the curling wand came out people were like “I stand where and I hold it how?” and it was an unusual thing that people weren’t used to and now I’d say most women actually prefer the wand over the curling iron. So with a little bit of effort I think everybody can achieve the look that they’re looking for.

What trends do you see becoming popular for winter and for spring 2014?

For winter, I definitely still see the braids. It’s been all over the runways last year for the winter looks. And now for the spring looks we’re seeing a lot of ponytails, a lot of really soft waves. I don’t think the trend is out yet, I’d say it’s still moving forward – but it’s becoming more undone, more tousled, more textured.

The NYC Talon NY Fashion Week Coverage: Strut

My NYFW experience kicked off with a bang last night at The MOMs Strut: The Fashionable Mom Show. Gone are the days of mom jeans and slouchy tees, last night these mom’s donned fashionable frocks and strutted their stuff for a number of worthy causes.

Among the causes were UN Shot @ Life – represented by Holly Pavlika, the Jason Taylor Foundation – represented by Katina and Zoe Taylor (wife and daughter of retired NFL Defensive End Jason Taylor), the Girl Rising Fund – represented by Tara Abrahams, Healthy Child, Healthy World – represented by Alysia Reiner, March of Dimes – represented by Victoria Recano and Maximilienne Burwell, and many more.

It wouldn’t be New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week without a few celebrity spottings!

CC Sabathia, Jorge Posada, Amar'e Stoudemire

New York Yankee CC Sabathia was present in support of wife Amber Sabathia, and kids Carsten, Jaden, Cyia, and Carter who all walked the runway for the PitCCh In Foundation:

Also sitting courtside – er, runway-side, was Amar’e Stoudemire, whose wife Alexis and children Assata, Ar’e, and Amar’e Jr. all walked the runway for the Amar’e Stoudemire Foundation.

Keeping company with Amar’e and CC was retired Yankee, Jorge Posada, whose wife Laura Posada strutted down the runway for the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction.

Also strutting her stuff was WNBC’s Today in NY anchor Darlene Rodriguez!

This is the third Strut: The Fashionable Mom Show – with this season’s show being sponsored primarily by Whirlpool, Cottonelle, and Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer and presented by The Moms and SWWCreative.

#NYFW 2012 Strut – The Fashionable Mom Show

I have a special place in my heart for fashion (you may or may not have noticed) and for moms, so I just thought that I’d share with you one of my favorite New York Fashion Week events that I attended last week – one that celebrated both of them!

At the Strut, Fashionable Moms Show – held at the Mercedes Benz NYFW Tents, my sister, close friend, and I were treated to a show highlighting women who were not only moms, but also empowered females.

Wendy Williams chatting up The Moms Melissa and Denise

My pictures were all a little fuzzy, but here’s a video of the event:

Some of Strut’s moms on a mission were Wendy Williams, Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein (The Moms), Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Lisa Rinna, Holly Pavlika, Jenny Fleiss, Latham Thomas, Bernadette Catrabone (who wore one of my favorite piece’s from Laundry by Shelli Segal), Kerri Gristina (wearing another favorite dress), Lucy Sykes, Melissa Lanz, Karen Klopp, Gigi Lee Chang, Chrysula Winegar, Erica Katz, Divya Gugnani, Kathleen Tullie, Tonia Sanders, Larysa DiDio, Shari Brooks, Devi Thomas, GY Sargent Stephanie Borges, Stephanie McMahon, Casey Santiago, Jeanette Simon, Joyce Shulman, Melanie Fascitelli, Jane Park (Julep Maven!), Carley Roney, Melanie Berliner, Amanda Poses, Lisa Sharkey, and Carey Socol.

What I loved (besides the great fashion), was that this show featured females who were all doing something amazing (in one way or another). Things like teaching, managing a business, serving her country, or supporting a worthy cause – that’s what makes them memorable, and that’s what makes them excellent role models not just for their kids but for women everywhere! I couldn’t help but think, while I was watching the runway, that my own mom would’ve been a perfect addition to the show ;)

After the show us ladies headed uptown and had some serious amazing Malaysian Pad Thai. It was so nice to be walking the city streets in my haute (okay, bought from Sears) couture, and hanging out with the women who inspire me!

New York Fashion Week searsStyle Brunch & Fall Fashion Preview

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to attend the searsStyle New York Fashion Week 2012 brunch held at Bagatelle in the meatpacking district. Now as a loyal Sears customer (my mom had my baby pix done at Sears!), I was more than thrilled to get a closer look at what Sears was offering in the way of fall fashion. And let me tell you, fashion options from Sears this season are all on trend and look pretty darn fabulous!

At the event I was able to scope out what’s in store for denim lovers like me. There were loads of options- everything from plaid cuff jeans, to nude-colored glittery ones. My favorites were a long pair of black skinny jeans- which I was lucky enough to get to take home with me.

I was also able to talk to the lead designer for the Kardashian Kollection- Bruno Schiavi. He was so nice, and was happy to talk about the process behind designing the line, as well as what it was like working with the Kardashians.

One of my favorite aspects of the event was the location. Bagatelle is located in the heart of the meatpacking district- where much of Fashions Night Out had taken place a couple of days earlier. The chic bistro catering the brunch- with tasty treats like bacon and black truffle scrambled eggs- which was super decadent and delicious!

Yum. The bacon is gone- I might have eaten it ;)

I had a blast at the searsStyle brunch! But for a full, more in depth coverage of what to expect this fall at Sears- stop by and read my first ever guest post on Whirlwind of Surprises- a blog owned by my friend and fellow fashionista, Cinny! Check it out here!

Thanks for stopping by, have any questions or comments about the searsStyle brunch I attended? Leave ‘em in the space below- comments make my day, and questions are answered asap!
