Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg Reveals Her Spring Beauty Tips with Zyrtec & Gilt City

My seasonal allergies act as my yearly reminder that spring has indeed sprung. Just a few days after I noticed my persistent sniffling and watery eyes were not a late-winter cold but just the return of my allergies, I was invited to join celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg and actress Jordanna Brewster for a fun event with Gilt City and Zyrtec who have teamed up with Jamie to offer Gilt City shoppers a sweet promo (more on that in a minute). The event was held at the Crosby Street Hotel, which is one of my favorite spots in the city because the penthouse views are seriously gorgeous, take a look!

Jamie’s tips for making sure that allergies don’t get the best of your beauty routine, include avoiding wiggling the wand (which I admit, I do) when you’ve got allergies as it can cause your eyes to water more and leave you with smudges. She also suggests trying out a flat fan brush instead of wand to apply mascara, if all else fails, use disposable mascara wands each time you apply mascara during the allergy season, it’ll help you avoid allergens and other build-up that can occur on reusable wands.

Jamie also recommends applying cool moisturizer, which may help reduce puffiness caused by allergies. Storing your moisturizer in your refrigerator (I store mine in the butter compartment), and before bedtime remove all your makeup with a gentle cleanser and apply the cool cream to your face to soothe and nourish skin overnight.

My favorite bit of new advice was this – very often oils, allergens, and other residue can build up on the surface of our makeup (and even in our cosmetic bags – so clean those regularly too!). To avoid this issue, Jamie suggests laying transparent adhesive tape over the powder to remove straggling debris from the surface. It’s also a good idea to opt for pencils instead of twist-up products, as every time you sharpen you’ll know that you’re starting off with a clean layer of makeup.

While I didn’t arrive early enough to catch Jordanna, I was able to get a gorgeous and Allergy Face friendly look done by Sarah DiGisco from GLAMSQUAD – thanks Sarah!

NYC Wine & Food Festival: Day 2

*This post is a part of my work with Progresso, however all opinions are completely honest and my own. For more information please see the PR tab above. Thank you!

My second day at the NYC Wine & Food Festival was pretty eventful – I definitely ate more, haha! There was less of a crowd, and I was able to actually stop at different places rather then being pushed along by a massive swarm of people. Here are some of my memorable eats:

NYCWFF FoodMore food from NYCWFF

My favorite was the smoked salmon from Domain NYC. They smoked the salmon right there and were drawing a curious crowd. They plated it in these little plastic orbs so that when you opened the lid your nose was flooded with the mouthwatering smoky scent of the salmon.

Domain NYC at NYCWFF

Another favorite was from Chipotle. Confessesion: I’ve never ever had Chipotle before – I know, I know, shame on me. However, if they turn out food as good as the carnita tacos I had from them at NYCWFF then they’ve won a new customer.

I also had a great clam chowder – however, I had been eating for a few hours straight and was too full to finish it.

In between eating I did manage to win a Rachel Ray grill set from the Progresso Artisan stage! I was so excited – I told you guys how I saw all these people on day 1 walking away with cool prizes, well, I absolutely did not expect to win one myself!

Progresso Artisan Giveaways

I have to say, one of my favorite moments from NYCWFF was meeting Ed Levine of SeriousEats.com. I’ve been reading Serious Eats since I was in middle school, and it was definitely a source of inspiration as both a writer and a eater. How much of an inspiration you ask? Well, between reading Serious Eats and Ruth Reichl’s books, I went from wanting to be a doctor to wanting to be a food writer, and I even went so far as to start my own NYC food blog while I was still in high school.

Anyways, Ed was on the Progresso stage with J. Kenji Lopez-Alt (Serious Eats & The Food Lab – we’re also massive Kenji fans at my house), as well as other chefs who were dishing up their own soups as well as engaging NYCWFF attendees with tales of their favorite soups, ingredients, and techniques. Good times. Check out what the chef’s created!

Later on restauranteur Joe Bastianich (Eataly, Del Posto, etc.) regaled the Progresso Artisan audience with everything from soup and wine pairings to stories of how he personally identifies with the Progresso brand, and more specfically their new Artisan Soup line!

Joe Bastianich at NYCWFF with Progresso Artisan SoupsI have to say, being a Progresso Artisan ambassador was awesome, and I can’t wait to share with you all what I thought of each of the soups – so stay tuned!

Backstage with Drew Noreen: Hair Styling Tips & Trends #NYFW #MBFW

This week, during New York Fashion Week I had the opportunity to chat with Not Your Mother’s lead stylist and consultant Drew Noreen backstage at the Style 360 Junk Food Vintage NFL Elements show curated by Kristin Cavallari.

I was able to ask him a few questions, and posted the interview on YouTube a few days ago – I’ve also transcribed it below, as there is a lot of background noise and somethings may be harder to hear. Be sure to read it through, or listen to the whole interview though because Drew has amazing advice for product picks and what styles you’ll want to look out for this season! Enjoy!

I noticed on your Instagram that you’re not a fan of the L’Oreal Feria Ombre hair coloring kit, what other at-home products do you think should be avoided?

There are other things, like at home smoothing treatments, [...] the at home highlight with the comb. Highlights are something we do at the salon, we place highlights in certain ways to accentuate your face, accentuate certain areas of the hair. You can make them hidden and more natural, you can place them right at the base and have them be more dramatic. Based on the size we’ll give you more of a natural feel, or more of a fun and funky feel – the thicker that you go. When you have an at home kit you’re just hoping that this comb is going to give it this even highlight feel. And what actually ends up happening is that you’ll get what we call “cheetah spots”, because as you’re combing it through it’s going to apply heavier at the root where you start, and as you move towards the bottom you might get an odd distribution of product. So you’ll wind up with some spots that are a little bit darker than others. And then, of course, the smoothing treatment era is huge right now and there are some at home kits that claim to do a smoothing treatment and you know – just put it in, comb it through, blow it out and you’re good to go. But really that’s als0 a very involved technical service, there’s a lot of things that can go wrong with that – you can break your hair off if you’re not doing it the proper way. So those sort of at-home do-it-yourself are definitely a no-go.

What are your top five styling essentials right now?

For tools, I definitely love that Not Your Mother’s just came out with this really cool tool here [Beach Babe 2-in-1 Expandable Styling System, seen below] where this actually snaps off and you’ve got this one as well. This one [Waving Iron] is actually really slim, so it’ll give you a really deep wave. Where this one [Bubble Wand] is going to give you a really tight wave, because you’re going to get a tighter curl here, and a looser curl here, which is what these shapes are meant to do. So I really like that styling tool at the moment.

tools-beachbabe-bg

Braids are huge. Braids are becoming very undone. You’ll noticed that it’s a french braid, but it’s pulled apart, it’s got texture, and it’s got flyaways. I tell a lot of my brides at the salon that we’re doing updo’s now for, that you kind of want those flyaways – it gives it a very soft, natural texture. We’re kind of moving away now from those kind of really sleek done coif styles.

Dry shampoo’s are really huge right now, especially now since a lot of women are getting into blow drying. Dry shampoo’s are going to dry you out an extra day or two, without keeping the hair greasy.

A heat protectant spray, that’s also huge because a lot of women are curling their hair now and there’s that infamous youtube video with the girl that burns her hair off with her curling iron – if you haven’t seen it, watch it! And that’s a perfect example of not prepping your hair properly and using the curling iron at too high of a heat. So you’re always going to want to get an iron that has a temperature adjustment – really you don’t need to go over 280 to 300 degrees. Going over that is when you’re risking damaging your hair.

A brush! Always a good brush! You want a brush that’s mixed with plastic and boar hair. The reason why is that the boar hair is going to smooth your hair and it’s going to help detangle the hair. It’s really really ideal for people that have finer texture whereas the plastic bristles are going to help give you a little bit more grip – and if you have thicker hair, it’s going to allow you to get more and brush more deeply at the same time and, again, you’re also controlling flyaways by using the boar hair.

Is there a question that you wish your clients would ask you?

I wish my clients would ask me for more detailed instructions on how to do their hair at home because thing that you always get is that “you do my hair at the salon, and I go home and can never do it myself”. I try to educate my clients as often as possible, I think a lot of them don’t take it in the right way because they challenge themselves in their mind that it’s going to be much more difficult than they expect; when if they really went home and tried it and took the advice they would probably find that it’s really easy to achieve the looks that they get in the salon at home. It all takes practice, I mean anything that you’re trying for the first time isn’t going to be the easiest. Like when the curling wand came out people were like “I stand where and I hold it how?” and it was an unusual thing that people weren’t used to and now I’d say most women actually prefer the wand over the curling iron. So with a little bit of effort I think everybody can achieve the look that they’re looking for.

What trends do you see becoming popular for winter and for spring 2014?

For winter, I definitely still see the braids. It’s been all over the runways last year for the winter looks. And now for the spring looks we’re seeing a lot of ponytails, a lot of really soft waves. I don’t think the trend is out yet, I’d say it’s still moving forward – but it’s becoming more undone, more tousled, more textured.

The NYC Talon NY Fashion Week Coverage: Strut

My NYFW experience kicked off with a bang last night at The MOMs Strut: The Fashionable Mom Show. Gone are the days of mom jeans and slouchy tees, last night these mom’s donned fashionable frocks and strutted their stuff for a number of worthy causes.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game with Duane Reade!

-post-white-script-400-2060782096

Remember when you were younger and played tag? And you would always know where base was so you could run right over when you were out of breath or your legs were tired. Well for NYC’ers like me, Duane Reade is pretty much base. And especially on hot summer days when the heat is unbearable, the cool air conditioned pharmacy offers a much welcome refuge from the sun. But Duane Reade has always kept it’s finger on the pulse of NYC’ers – with products, sales, and events that appeal to city folk – their most recent was when as a part of MLB’s FanFest they sent their street team out to give out FREE tickets to this years All Star Week!

FanFest4
I took my sisters and brother down with me to MLB’s Fan Cave this past week to check out what the Duane Reade street team was up to with those tickets. We forgot to wear our MLB duds, but the street team’s energy was definitely catching!

FanFest1FanFest7

Proof that NYC is really just a small town – many NY’ers on line had heard a “rumor” that there was going to be free FanFest tickets in front of the Fan Cave, but weren’t sure what was up. Handing out flyers, the Duane Reade street team let waiting fans know that anyone decked out in their best MLB outfit could win a pair of tickets just by letting the team know that “I want to be drafted by Duane Reade!” And who wouldn’t?

FanFest10

FanFest6

We met Yankees pitcher David Robertson outside of the Fan Cave during the event!

Most people who were initially on line with us actually ended up getting tickets! How awesome is that!

FanFest2

We have loads of traditions in my family, and one of them is baseball in the summer – in fact most NYC’ers I know share this tradition, and I love that Duane Reade reaches out and connects with the city by sharing these favorite pastimes!

After checking out the Duane Reade street team, and making plans to return the next day – with our best Yankees gear on! We actually went on a tour of the MLB Fan Cave! It was awesome! See all my pics of the Duane Reade street team, the celebrity we met, and MLB Fan Cave by clicking here!

Wendy Williams & Tavern 29 Event Recap!

A couple weeks ago I was invited by The Moms to join them for a light brunch at Tavern 29 with well known talk show host and celebrity Wendy Williams. There really is nothing like being on a rooftop in Manhattan, and Tavern 29′s rooftop space rates as one of my favorites!

Tavern3.jpgTavern1.jpg

Bloggers and other media personalities gathered to talk shop with Wendy about her newly released book – Ask Wendy, Straight Up Advice for All the Drama in Your Life. Wendy was more than gracious and of course, completely candid!

Tavern6.jpg

Before she took a few Q & A’s, Wendy doled out experienced based advice about cheating husbands and backstabbing girlfriends. Speaking from her own experience, Wendy’s advice came across as heartfelt and full of good intentions – providing a mature and serious, as well as honest outlook to life’s everyday drama. Of course, chatting with Wendy also meant lots of laughs!

Tavern8.jpg

Afterwards Wendy had a book signing, stopping to talk with some guests with personal questions of their own, and taking pictures.

Tavern10.jpg

I had a blast, the food was awesome! And I definitely plan on returning to Tavern 29 – I’d love to have a look around the lower levels and see what other yummy options they have to offer! With a perfect breeze and exposed brick walls, Tavern 29 would make an ideal event space, I’m even seriously considering doing my parents anniversary party or an upcoming graduation party there.
