6 Ways to Welcome Spring in NYC

One second it’s pouring rain, and the next it’s gorgeous and sunny out – weather like this can only mean one thing – spring has finally come ‘round! It’s time to call up your bestie, emerge from winter hibernation, pop on your sunglasses and get brunching. We’ve pulled together some of our favorite ways to welcome in warmer weather here in NYC! What are your favorite spring spots?

Take a stroll around Central Park…

I know, it’s the most overused recommendation ever. But it’s overused for a reason, we’ve lived here our entire lives and make time to stop by every season, it’s just that gorgeous. Pack up a picnic basket or a light snack and meander on one of the park’s many paths. Feeling a little more adventurous? Head up to 105th street and Broadway to the Conservatory Garden for a real spring treat. The six-acre formal garden opens at 8am and shutters at dusk.

Get cooking!

Cooking School

I love cooking during the spring. The weather is still friendly for baking, and there is an abundance of ingredients available at the farmer’s market to experiment with. Right now Gilt City has two excellent offers for the culinary inclined – learn to make doughnuts, buttery risotto, or Malaysian curry (among other dishes) at Chanterelle Cooking School in the Lower East Side.

Or, if you’ve already mastered the doughnut, you can also head over to Bhagavat Life, a center for holistic living where you’ll learn how to prepare vegetarian cuisine as well as the ancient principles of healthy living. Learn more here.

For the blushing bride…

Brides

I hear spring is the busiest season when it comes to walking down the aisle. On March 31st Brides Magazine is hosting a wedding photography workshop with expert wedding photographer, Brian Marcus. The workshop with teach you all of the insider secrets to the perfect poses – that way you can get your big day pose down pat. Hosted at Condé Nast’s One World Trade Center Photo Studio, the workshop will also feature mini hair trials by Eva Scrivo Salon and mini makeovers by Rouge New York.

Better with brunch!

Ristorante Morini

Sometimes I prefer to let someone else do the cooking for me. Luckily, NYC is chock full of amazing brunch spots. I recommend Bar Primi, Dominique Bistro, Catch, and Ristorante Morini. I love to look to Instagram for brunch/lunch recommendations, so tag me (@nyctalon) if you find a great spot too! My advice, keep an eye out for local deals, it’s a great way to try a new place. Right now you can score a three-course lunch for two for only $50 at Ristorante Morini, I just ate there and it was amazing, check it out here.

And a dash of entertainment…

Gwyneth

Hang out with Gwyneth Paltrow at the Baruch Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, April 12th. The award-winning actress and author will be sharing her new book “It’s All Easy: Delicious Weekday Recipes for the Super-Busy Home Cook”. When you go through this link, you can also score a one-year membership with the Hudson Union, as well as preferred seating, with your ticket purchase.

Do something eventful!

From street fairs to festivals, NYC turns out for the spring. My favorite events are cultural and food events (naturally). The Village Voice is hosting their first annual Brunch Eats Breakfast-For-Dinner Food Event, tickets just started going on sale today – pick them up here and enjoy mouthwatering brunch dishes all aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s Flight Deck! Sounds like an event that is not to be missed!

You could also catch MasterVoice’s Dido and Aeneas on April 28th and 29th, featuring Kelli O’hara, Victoria Clark, Elliot Madore, Anna Christy, and Sarah Mesko – I also hear that the gowns for this performance were designed by Christian Siriano, I bet they’re gorgeous! Tickets on sale here.

You can also pop in to any one of NYC’s amazing museums – I’ve been planning to go to The Frick Collection for ages and I’ve decided this is the year that I go, so I might just see you there!

What are you favorite places to stop by during springtime?

7 Scents for Spring

Spring is almost here and it couldn’t be more welcome! I don’t know how the weather is where you live, but frankly I’m a little tired of slip-sliding over ice patches in the city. As we head in to warmer weather I thought it would be really fun to share 7 Scents for Spring – a collection of some of my personal favorite Spring scents, as well as some exciting scents that have just hit store shelves!

7 Scents for Spring

TOCCA Isabel – One of the latest additions to the TOCCA family, Isabel promises to be an ideal fragrance this upcoming season with notes of Mediterranean Orange, Pear, Spanish Rose and (love this) of leather, and vetiver.

Library of Flowers Honeycomb – Honeycomb is redolent of lazy Spring days where the sun is comforting and warm and you can smell the sweet scent of fresh flowers. Plus, Library of Flowers’ packaging is irresistibly beautiful. Top: Sugared Fig, Middle: Ambrosia Honey, Bottom: Royal Bee Blossom. Library of Flowers also recommends their Kirimashi Air!

ESCADA Turquoise Summer – To be fair, this scent is more designated for summer, but if you’re into bright fruit-infused scents that mellow out with the more sensual sandalwood and vanilla, then this one is right up your alley!

CLEAN Air – I absolutely adore this fragrance. I was introduced to the CLEAN brand a couple of years ago by my younger sister (she’s one classy gal) and now I own quite a lot of CLEAN scents. My most recent acquisition is CLEAN Air. It’s a very versatile fragrance because not only is it a gorgeous, lush, crisp, yet woodsy scent, but it also brings out really great notes when paired with other CLEAN fragrances! Top notes feature bergamot blossoms, lush green accord, and mountain air accord; mid notes include sparkling freesia and dewy peonies, and base notes boast enveloping musk, cashmere woods, and white amber.

Illume Cactus verde

Illume Cactus Verde – My sister loves this scent! And who could blame her? How outrageously Spring-ready does this fragrance sound? “Feel as brilliant as a bloom and as sweet as a succulent. A bright blend of cassis, pink sea salt, and wild geranium with a hint of avocado.” Can’t get enough of Illume (me either!)? Here’s what they recommend for Spring!

TokyoMilk Le Petit No. 2 – Typically, I’d say anything from their Dark collection, but for Spring I’m going to have to defer to the lovely brand themselves:

Bath & Body Works French Lavender & Honey – This is one of my all-time favorite scents. Normally I would not splurge on the perfume version of B&BW fragrances but the French Lavender & Honey line smells so amazing that I did (twice!). It’s a lovely floral scent with a slight sort of fruity/citrus undertone and a great musk and honey base that balances it all out.

I’m not the only one sharing seven things about spring! Check out my fellow Chosen Chix and see their thoughts on spring:

DIY: Get Your Feet Ready for Sandal Season!

It happens every year. Winter says it’s final goodbye’s, and Spring drips into warmer weather and that’s when everybody pulls out their peep-toe pumps, strappy shoes, casual (but cool) flip-flops, and trendy sandals. I eagerly pull out my favorite espadrilles, slide off my winter worn boots and find my feet are hardly ready to go prancing about in revealing footwear. I’m not going to go into details about the horrendous state my poor feet will be by the end of a winter spent stomping around in boots, but I am going to tell you about how I rehab them and pamper them back into health!

DIY-Sandal-Ready-Feet
These are my top five products for pampering my feet – you can always switch them out for something that works better for you, but all of these are tried and true for me:

1. Sally Hansen Clip N’ Catch Nail Clipper (ARV $4) – Best quality clippers I’ve owned, far better then the $1 nail clippers from the beauty supply store. It’s durable, convenient, definitely worth a spot in your routine. The Treat Ur Toes Control Toenail Clipper is another great option.

Burts-Bees-Cuticle-Cream

2. Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream (ARV $6) – this cuticle cream smells nicely of lemon and does exactly what it’s supposed to, it moisturizes, softens, and nourishes cuticles with Sweet Almond Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Vitamin E, and Sunflower Oil. Massage around your nails nightly and in the morning if your nails need a little extra TLC!

3. Nail Buffer (ARV $1-5) – Give your piggie’s the ultimate twinkle toe treatment and give them a good buff and shine. You’ve gone ahead and invested in taking care of your feet – complete the job and contour, smooth and floss your toenails to polish-ready perfection. You can really go anywhere for one of these, but I reccomend the Ulta 4-Way Buffer Block or the Revlon Crazy Shine Nail Buffer, which has a shape more suited for nails I think.

Avon-Beauty-Blogger

4. Foot Works Beautiful Action Pedi-Peel (ARV $6) – I have been obsessed with these pedi-pads for the past couple of weeks as they’ve completely saved my heels and really my feet altogether. Firstly, the pads smell really good – like a cucumber spa scent. And all you have to do is wipe your feet down with them and allow your feet to air dry, I always follow up with lotion. What it does is retexturizes your feet with glycolic acid and moisturizers – since I’ve been using it I’ve noticed my feet are significantly softer and smoother – love it!

Amlactin-Foot-Cream

5. AmLactin Foot Cream (ARV $10) – Best foot cream I’ve ever tried. Containing an alpha-hydroxy therapy using lactic acids this offers intense moisturization – without the irritation. I usually apply it after the pedi-peel and before I go to bed, I’ll slather it on and put on a clean pair of fuzzy socks – by the time I wake up my feet are ultra-soft!

The great thing is that all these products are $10 and under and they last for a good long while. Do you have any tips or tricks or any favorite products that you use to pamper your feet? Let me know in the comments below!

Picnic Pick-Ups at Duane Reade!

cbias-disclosure
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for Spring! One of my favorite things to do is to grab a friend and picnic in the park. I’m lucky enough to live in a city where my park of choice is the ever-gorgeous Central Park, and there is nothing more lovely then a Spring picnic in Central Park. While it’s still too cold out to dig my picnic blanket out of storage, I did want to share with you guys my picnic picks from Duane Reade.

#DRSpringTime, #shop, #CollectiveBias

Duane Reade’s fresh foods section always offers snacks that are perfect for dining alfresco. Recently, I swung by Duane Reade, where Spring has already made a welcome entrance, and made a few (and I use that word loosely) snacking selections.

#DRSpringTime, #shop, #CollectiveBias

#DRSpringTime, #shop, #CollectiveBias
Salads are a great option for picnics in the park (or wherever), and Duane Reade has a ton to choose from. I chose Marinated Mozzarella & Tomatoes in Pesto and Mini Ravioli with Sundried Tomato in Pesto – oh my goodness they were both ridiculously tasty, I had to stop myself from eating all of both! The Marinated Mozzarella really has that great, bright Spring flavor. Love it.

#DRSpringTime, #shop, #CollectiveBias

The Prosciutto & Mozzarella with Fig Spread on a Cranberry Fig Ficelle was a new discovery for me and a happy departure from the standard ham and cheese. I was so worried that this was going to be dry and plain, instead it was surprisingly full of flavor. The mozzarella was creamy and the cranberry fig ficelle was a perfect bread choice for this sandwich. If Duane Reade sold the ficelle separately I’d be first in line to buy.

#DRSpringTime, #shop, #CollectiveBias

There are so many amazing foods to choose from, and I love that Duane Reade is so convenient. I can’t wait to for Spring – I know where I’ll be picking up all my picnic essentials from!

My Ultra-Glam Girls Night In with Sally Hansen! #IHeartMyNailArt

It’s not very often that I get to have a girls night in – so when I recently had the opportunity I pounced on it and went all out! I’d been planning to try out color blocking nail art styles and who better to be my guinea pigs then my girlfriends?!

When I called up my friend with an invite she insisted that the party be furnished with junk food and treats, “I need a girls night” she commented eagerly. So after I unearthed My Big Fat Greek Wedding for us to watch, I dutifully headed to Walgreens and loaded up on lots of treats – including some fabulous nail art supplies from Sally Hansen!

sally hansen

There were so many colors and polish formula options that I felt like a kid in a candy store – but I eventually settled on a few. I also picked up a new top coat, nail polish remover pads, and this super cool Sally Hansen No More Mistakes Manicure Clean-Up Pen.

Walgreens Haul

After I stocked up on primping products I loaded up on lots of snacks! My haul included White Castle Mini Burgers, hot wings, honey BBQ wings, mozzarella cheese sticks, Valencia almonds, almond M&M’s, mini powdered doughnuts, cookies, margarita glasses, three Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Strips, six nail polishes, a top coat, a No Mistakes pen, nail polish removing pads, and old fashioned ice cream sandwiches – all for a grand total of $120! Not bad for a Girls Night In with all the fixin’s! Plus because I used my Walgreen’s Balance Rewards Card I scored 1,000 rewards points! See my whole shopping trip by clicking here.

i heart my nail art party
My GNI was so much fun! It did get quite messy but everybody had a great time and left with fab nails! I served loads of snacks – which were quite sticky so we had to clean our hands and nails really well before we started designing them!

Sally Hansen Polish

I really loved how easy it was to achieve the color blocked look with the Sally Hansen Salon Effects nail strips – which paired up beautifully with the bright colored nail polishes I picked out. Here’s a quick tutorial:

color blocking tutorial sally hansen1. Clean your nails and file them down to your desired length and shape.

2. Coat your nails in a base color – two coats should be sufficient, with five minutes in between each coat to dry. You can also add an extra color at this point – like a quick swipe along the edge.

3. Cut your nail strips into desired shapes. These should be smaller than your nail – that way you can see a decent amount of your base color.

4. Apply nail strips and smooth over and shape edges. Remove any excess nail strip that might be hanging over.

5. Apply a generous layer of top coat, which will seal your nails. Repeat if necessary.

6. Enjoy your fab nails! Feel free to add extra embellishments like glitter or rhinestones – personalize your color blocked look in any way you like!

Here are the other designs that we created – let me know what you think!

Right now until 4/27 Walgreens has all the Sally Hansen Xtreme Nail Polishes on sale for 2/$5 – and you get a 1,000 points when you use your balance rewards card! Looking to try out color blocking – the two polishes seen here would make a great ultra glam look – and you can even buy them online at Walgreen’s!

Get Playful with the Y-Volution YGlider!

My family and I are serious park junkies, we love to pack up a few snacks, maybe even a picnic basket and head to our local park. We usually bring along a plethora of toys – everything from basketballs and tennis rackets to sidewalk chalk. Spring is my favorite time to head out doors and I distinctly remember when I was young that I loved to grab my scooter and let the budding greenery speed by as I hit the pavement like the little speed devil that I was.

Scooter for Little Kids
Scooters are probably the funnest toys out there, and I love that Y-Volution now has scooters for budding speedsters as young as three years old!

YGlider1
I recently had a chance to test out the Y-Volution G2 YGlider for kids three and older and I was thrilled with the construction of the scooter! It designed to have a lean-to-steer mechanism, which means better control for your little one. I love how the YGlider fosters better balance, motor, and coordination skills! The two wheels in front help with better balance and support, plus the handles are cushioned rubber – which gives your little guy or girl the control they need.

Y Glider

With only two pieces, all you have to do is click in the handle bar and you’re off!

What I love about the YGlider is that it’s a unpack and play kind of product. You can put it together right out of the box – I took mine to the park in the box so I could get some great pictures to show you guys, and I was nervous when I realized I had left my mini travel screw driver and scissors at home. So I was super happy to discover that it really was incredibly simple to put together and wasn’t locked in the box like most toys (*cough, cough* Barbie) are. Also, the YGlider is incredibly light weight and I had no problem toting it around.

The Yvolution YGlider retails at around $59.99 at Toys R ‘Us and is worth every penny – having done some research I’d say that it’s definitely the coolest, most safe, practical, and fun scooter for little ones out there – I know my four year old nephew is going to love speeding on this scooter all Spring and Summer long!

Spring Has Sprung! Birdy’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Recipe

I love spring- who doesn’t? Not only is the weather great, but so is the food. Like most family’s, mine has a tradition of spring barbequing, picnicking, and park-going. But one tradition that holds a special place in my heart is spring pie-baking. Me and my older sister learned pie-making at the elbow of my mother when she used to make pies for holidays like Christmas, and since then we’ve taken up the torch (or roll of dough) and picked up where she left off- she’s not dead, she just doesn’t have to bake them with us around anymore (my sister thought I should add that because it she felt it sounded like a eulogy). Anyways, my most favorite pie is the one my sister makes every spring- Birdy’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. The buttery crust for this pie is a perfect cradle for the tart-sweet interior, enjoy with a heap of vanilla ice cream. So I thought I’d bamboozle her into letting me use her recipe here on my blog- thanks sis!

Birdy’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

*Simple Flaky Crust

2 1/4 cups flour
2/3 cup Crisco
1/3 cup water

note: use a large sized bowl otherwise it’ll get all over you!

1.Dump the flour into a bowl, and run your fingers through it to work out any clumps (you can use a sifter if you have one).
2. Add the Crisco, and start pressing into the flour with a fork or knife until it is distributed all through the flour in small pea sized pieces. DON’T make them too small. Those clumps of Crisco make the crust flaky!
3. Add in the water around the edge of the mixture, and rake it in with a fork until it is completely absorbed into the flour and Crisco. It will still look dry, which is GOOD.
4. Remove ANY jewelery at this point. Take your hands and starts pushing into the dough mixture until it starts to stick together and you can hold it in your hands. you should get a ball of dough the size of a softball. If you see some remnants of flour in the bowl its okay.

At this point you can either take pieces of the dough and press it into a pie pan, or…

5. Take some plastic wrap or a gallon sized baggy and flour lightly. Put half the dough in between the floured plastic layers. Using a heavy rolling pin (or even a bottle of wine or olive oil) press down on the dough in circular motions until you have a round-ish shape.
6a. If for the inside of the pie, put in the pan and use your fingers to pinch off the excess around the rim.
6b. If for the top, you can cut it into strips (still on the plastic, and carefully lay them one by one in a criss-cross design.

Strawberry and Rhubarb Pie

1 batch of *Simple Flaky Crust
filling:
2- 1in wide rhubarb stalks (halved down the middle and cut into 1/2 in pieces)
2 containers of strawberries (cut into quarters)
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1tbs lemon juice

note: you can prepare filling first so it can sit while you make the crust!

1. preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll out half of the pie dough and put in pan. Roll out other half and cut into strips and set aside.
2. Mix together the rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, flour, and lemon juice. set aside for a half hour.
3. Pour filling into crust and create lattice with dough strips on top.
4. Slide into the lower middle rack and bake for 20 minutes at 400, than turn the oven down to 350. cook until you see the filling starts to bubble and leave a thick red syrup on the crust.
5. Take out and rest until it fully cools. if you don’t, the filling will fall out when you cut it.

Serve with vanilla ice cream and dig in!!
