Beauty Review: Michael Todd Soniclear Petite Facial Skin Cleansing System

It’s been quite a few years since the first facial cleansing system hit the market. Since then, it’s been really interesting seeing how those systems have changed and evolved. The Soniclear Petite is the world’s first antimicrobial sonic skin cleansing system and it is definitely a game changer.

Sonic Skin Cleansing System

If you’ve read my reviews before you know that I have sensitive skin, so finding skincare products that work for me is pretty high on my list of beauty priorities. The Soniclear Petite caters to sensitive skin with 3 speeds – and none of them feel ridiculously rough, no harsh scrubbing here!

Designed to strip away dead skin cells, makeup, dirt and oil 6x better than hands alone, the Soniclear utilizes unique sonic technology that enables the petite’s brushes to move up to 18,000 times per minute. But what’s with the “antimicrobial”? Well, Soniclear cleansing heads are treated during the manufacturing process with LIFE antimicrobial product protection to inhibit up to 99.9% of stain and odor causing bacteria. Basically, the cleansing brush will stay cleaner for up to 6 more months.

Soniclear Petite

What I really love about the cleanser though is that it has a self-timer, so you hear this beep as your brushing your face which signifies that you’ve spent enough time cleansing one area of your face and you should move on to the next. This is really crucial to any skincare regimen because you generally do not want to over cleanse as it has been known to cause dryness which can lead to excess oil production, etc.

I also love that it’s cordless and waterproof, so you can use it in the shower – I feel so trained to not bring electronics into the shower that I don’t, but you definitely can if you want to, haha! I was sent mine via Amazon, and that one from Michael Todd came with the Michael Todd Damascus Rose Cleanser which I love. I’m already a massive Michael Todd fan from back when all the YouTube beauty gurus were raving about their green algae cleanser.

Bite Beauty’s Amuse Bouche Collection

Amuse Bouche Bite Beauty Influenster Box

I think I’ve been with Influenster for about four years now, and never have I been so excited to get picked for one of their boxes! I know, I’m easily pleased. The Amuse Bouche collection was released in time for this Spring. Influenster and Bite Beauty sent me three of their lipsticks from the collection, however the complete collection consists of 34 different shades.

Amouse Bouche by Bite BeautyAmouse Bouche Lipstick Colors

What’s special about the Amuse Bouche collection is that they are made from 12 edible oils, which lend them their ultra-creamy hydrating texture. The three shades I received were Gazpacho, Beetroot, and Pepper. Up until I received this box I had never tried anything from Bite Beauty before, I had heard really good things though so my expectations were pretty high. Now having tried these beauties out I can see what all the fuss is about – the pigmentation and staying power of these lipsticks are insane.

Amouse Bouche Lipstick

The formulation is, true to form, very creamy and hydrating. I don’t often use lip liner, but I feel like using a liner – even something like Pixi’s Invisible Smudge Stopper liner – would be a good idea with these. And again, the color payoff here is off the charts, also you won’t need to keep checking the mirror to see if the lipstick is still there, I wore one all day (*sidenote, I didn’t eat much that day) and I only had to reapply once. However if you are having regular meals, I recommend you reapply after eating because these transfer a lot.

Gazpacho was a very Taylor Swift-esc true red with blue undertones. I mean this is your fire engine red, break out the pin curls and victory rolls kind of lipstick. While the Beetroot is a rich berry infused with deep reds, and Pepper is a mid-tone dusty rose with brown undertones. I own quite a lot of pink and dusty rose shades and am a massive fan of that color family, so Pepper was a welcome addition. It’s actually a lot deeper on than you would think. I also loved Gazpacho and Beetroot, unfortunately they didn’t really look right with my skin tone – which was so disappointing to me as they are such great shades. Eh, I guess you can’t win them all – my sister was all too pleased to take those two shades of my hands and every time I see her slide them out of her makeup case I breathe a sigh of regret. Luckily I have Pepper to comfort me, which is a neutral worthy of being worn frequently.

New in Beauty: PIXI Nourishing Lip Polish

I’ve just recently gotten over a nasty cold, and between two weeks of coughing and sniffling and being perpetually in a state of dehydration, my lips have definitely taken a hit. In the midst of all that I have also been recently reviewing Bite Beauty’s new Amuse Bouche collection (catch that post tomorrow!) and I was quickly made aware of the terrible state of my lips – they were really dry and generally in a bad way. Since I’m not much of a DIY girl – I tend to make messes and forget the DIY project in the fridge for months – I immediately went online shopping for a lip scrub. I’m a massive fan of Sugar’s Lip Polish, however, it is rather pricey for a polish and I’d much rather save up my pennies for their body scrub or Soy Face Cleanser, so I was really on the hunt for a more wallet friendly alternative. Well, literally the day after I was doing my online search I was sent PIXI’s new Nourishing Lip Polish! I might have actually squealed when I opened it – it was exactly what I was looking for!

This  2-in-1 lip exfoliator + nourisher helps to repair & protect dry, sensitive lips. A nutrient-rich formula smoothes lips with shea butter & a blend of sweet almond, apricot, and evening primrose oils. The unique massage applicator works to stimulate circulation, giving a healthy, plumped effect.

Right off the bat I’m going to tell you that the PIXI Nourishing Lip Polish is an excellent dupe for fresh’s Sugar Lip Polish – the smell is almost identical, with this one leaning more on the sweet side (an effect of the xylitol, perhaps?). I’m also going to tell you, that although I love fresh’s scrub, I liked PIXI’s version a little better. The Nourishing Lip Polish tube is very reminiscent of all those lip glosses I used to buy back in ‘99, except this tube features a massage applicator that is designed specifically for massaging in product. I feel like this really sets it apart from other scrubs, I love the fact that I don’t have to dip my fingers in a pot which can sometimes feel unhygienic. Also, it feels like my lips are getting a massage which is nice too.

The scent is very citric, likely by way of the grapefruit seed oil, orange peel oil, apricot kernel oil, and cranberry seed oil. The draw for a lot of scrubs is that they feature brown sugar, which acts as a natural exfoliant. There isn’t any mention of brown sugar in the ingredients, but it definitely has a “scrubby” feel to it. Also it’s more wallet friendly than many other scrubs on the market. PIXI has recently been rolling out a plethora of new products, and they’re really hitting the mark, I have a few on my hands that I can’t wait to review, but I definitely recommend picking up one of these if you suffer from dry and slightly feathery (is there a polite way of saying peeling?) lips.

PIXI’s Nourishing Lip Polish retails for $12, pick up at Target or on the Pixi site here.

New in Beauty: Matrix Style Link Gloss, Hold, & Volume Boosters

Matrix Booster Series

What I first noticed about Matrix’s Style Link collection is that each and every single product smells absolutely amazing. Seriously. The entire Style Link line consists of fourteen products, designed to Prep, Play, Perfect, and Boost your style. While I’m still in the process of using and reviewing some of the Style Link products that Matrix generously sent my way*, I wanted to specifically call out the booster products in this collection. The Matrix Style Link collection features three boosters, Gloss, Hold, and Volume Booster. The genius behind the Booster products is that they can be used alone, or as well as a booster to another product. For instance, you could add a drop of Gloss Booster to the Matrix Smooth Setter or to their hair spray – you could even use it with other brands too. I love that you can really experiment with the intensity of the product and that it lends you more control over how you’re styling your hair. Here’s the low down on each booster:

Matrix Style Link Boosters ReviewMatrix1

Gloss Booster –  Utilize this unique concentrated formula to add serious shine to your ‘do. What makes this a stand-out product is not just that it successfully adds a lovely shine and finish to your locks but that it can also work to soften hold. Use on damp or dry hair.

Hold Booster – A little goes a long way with this Booster. This formula is surprisingly light and non-sticky, and it’s ideal for taming unruly flyaways and keeping your style on lock.

Matrix Volume Booster Style Link Collection

Volume Booster – With a consistency bordering on a serum and a gel, the Matrix Volume Booster delivers amazing volume (especially when paired up with a little Volume Builder Mousse). I recommend it if you’re someone who likes to blow dry your hair after showering – just apply this to towel dry hair before you start styling. Bonus points = this does not leave your hair feeling lightly glued together or leaves your roots feeling gooey.

More information on the Matrix Style Link collection and Boosters can be found here. Each Boost runs about $20 a bottle, but is well worth it considering that a little goes a very long way where these are concerned.

Have you tried any of Matrix’s styling products? What are your favorite hair styling tools? Let me know in the comments below!

New in Beauty: butter LONDON ShadowClutch & Wardrobe Duos

There’s nothing more exciting to me than when a brand I know and love comes out with a new and innovative beauty product. This year butter LONDON has released a new addition to their cosmetic line – the butter LONDON ShadowClutch. This gem actually ended up on my desk some while ago, and I haven’t really had a chance to try it until recently. It’s a customizable clutch designed to display butter LONDON’s new range of eyeshadows – and in my opinion it’s a perfect travel companion, and certainly a great gift for the holidays.

Butter LONDON has formulated their eyeshadows to be infused with primer, oil-absorbing, and skin balancing, with plenty of color payoff. Having been a favorite polish brand of nail artists and beauty junkies everywhere, it’s obvious that butter LONDON knows what they’re doing in terms of color. What really makes this palette stand out from the rest is the size, the convenience, and the innovative design that allows you to slide out eyeshadows, and replace them with new ones without disturbing the look of the clutch and with complete control and stability. The clutch really is a perfect size for traveling, taking on-the-go, or just using at home. A lot of build-it-yourself palette’s tend to be bulky, this one is not.

I was sent the Natural Charm ShadowClutch to test out. Now,  I have plenty of natural/neutral palettes so I don’t need another one – but this one is not your standard neutral. The eyeshadows included are Linen (a matte vanilla), Quartz (a warm beige sheen), Camo (a dark khaki sheen), Camel (matte nude), Citrine (coral sheen), and Leather (matte chocolate brown). I was completely enraptured with how smooth the formula is, and how much I loved the colors – I definitely appreciate the Camel and Citrine, two colors I haven’t yet seen in a neutral palette, but are both so gorgeous and easy to use.

I was also sent two Wardrobe Duos – eyeshadow pieces that are sold in twos and designed to fit in the palette – in Moody Blues and Fancy Flutter. The Moody Blues duo features shades Sequins (soft mint green sheen), and Sapphire (a navy blue sheen). Fancy Flutter features Feather (a beige sheen), and my favorite new color of the year, Plume – a multidimensional chameleon sheen that I seriously cannot get enough of.

The butter LONDON ShadowClutch only costs $39, and each Wardrobe Duo clocks in at $15. This means that each shadow in the clutch clocks in at around $6.50 each, and $7.50 each for the Wardrobe Duo – which is a real steal as most custom palette’s cost quite a bundle and some don’t even include eyeshadows with the cost of the palette. Plus the eyeshadows themselves are up there in terms of quality with much more expensive brands, and cost as little as some drugstore eyeshadows. Honestly, I’m kicking myself for not seizing on the clutch sooner – it’s definitely one of the more exciting pieces that I’ve seen this year.

You can pick up the clutch and check out other shades from butter LONDON here. So ladies, what do you think? Do you like the butter LONDON ShadowClutch? Do you know anyone who’d love to get their hands on one?

Neutrogena Hydro Boost: The Secret to Healthy Skin

I’m the first to admit, I can be a little fickle when it comes to my skincare routine. I always have the best intentions, researching and investing in a solid routine, only to let it fall by the wayside two or three weeks later. Or I’ll get a new product and ditch my entire method just for testing purposes. But there is one product in my routine (or lack thereof) that I absolutely cannot live without – and that is a moisturizer. It’s so crucial that I have in my arsenal a perfect moisturizer, I have the driest skin ever and if I don’t moisturize then my skin gets really parched, flaky, and can even crack (at least in the edges of my nose). This summer I was introduced to Neutrogena’s new Hydro Boost Moisturizer at the perfect time – when I happen to be having a massive skin dry spell.

Earlier in August I attended the InStyle Summer Social where one of the brands present was Neutrogena. The rep and I really got talking about moisturizers and what our peeves were (like stickiness-yuck!) and what I like best (I’m a sucker for gel formulations). She told me that the Neutrogena Hydro Boost is lightweight, and that it’s oil free and absorbs quickly into the skin. So, naturally, I was pretty jazzed when I got my hands on an entire jar of their Hydro Boost by way of my gift bag.

I put it immediately to the test. I used this all over my face, focusing especially on the areas around my nose which were beginning to redden with dryness. I don’t normally allow my skin to reach this state of distress, but it was the middle of August and sweat has always exacerbated my dry skin. Even my ears were suffering. My skin instantly feel hydrated in that cool and clean sort of way. Amazingly, within three days of use, twice a day, my skin was back to full health. I’m dead serious, by ears healed up and my nose wasn’t dry at all. Even my foundation was going on smoother!

What makes Neutrogena Hydro Boost so special is that it is formulated with hyaluronic acid, which retains up to 1000x its weight in water. This refreshing water gel plumps skin cells with intense hydration, and locks it in. Utilizing hyaluronic acid, as well as olive extract which aids the skin’s moisture barrier against moisture loss – this product is designed to be a moisturizer of epic proportions. I am obsessed, I keep it right by my bed. Now, the Hydro Boost line actually features three different products – the Hydro Boost Water Gel with Hyaluronic Acid, the Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Fragrance Free for Extra Dry Skin, and the Hydro Boost Eye Gel.

New in Beauty: Physicians Formula Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit

This is a sponsored post for Physicians Formula through Condé Nast.

I remember when I was in high school and we first started seeing those “fiber lash” mascaras hit the market. The first ones on shelves were a hit simply because they worked. Now, of course, we expect more from fiber lashes – we want them to work and to actually look good doing it – which means no spidery lashes! Having been a massive fan of Physicians Formula since their Organic Wear mascara, I was thrilled to get my hands on their new Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit!

Physicians Formula Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit

First off, the packaging is pretty solid. It’s red and silver and quite large – I’m sort of curious about why PF chose to go with the sort of insulated double plastic tube, I wonder if it helps protect the formula of the mascara? Either way, it’s simple and more minimalist (in comparison to their more glam designs) which is great when you’re using a two-step product.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster

For me, the formula for the mascara felt similar to the Organic Wear one – it’s very silky and luxurious without weighing your lashes down. It feels almost like a curling mascara, as I sort of felt like the formula lifted, coated, and separated my lashes. Then came the fibers, or as PF calls them, “Extensions”.

Mascara Fibers Physicians Formula

I wanted to love these so much – and I do, I really do. However, I do think it’s worth noting that these extensions can get pretty messy. The Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit is meant to work with double applications of both the mascara and fibers, and I found that when I was done I had a neat sprinkling of black “fibers” all along my eye and cheekbone. Don’t worry – the residue fibers are super easy to clear off – just use a makeup remover wipe or a dry foundation brush, or even some tissue. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but if you have sensitive eyes then it is worth taking note of.

eyes2

Flyaway fibers aside, the actual formulation behind the kit is pretty impressive. The Extensions are all-natural, made primarily from cellulose, with panthenol, botanical extracts, and vitamin E as well as natural colorants from artichoke and basil. And the mascara formula contains the same lash-boosting peptide (myristoyl pentapeptide-17) that’s found in the original Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum and Eye Booster Felt Tip Eyeliner + Serum – which visibly enhances natural lash growth and the appearance of lashes! It also effectively conditions and nourishes lashes.

Physicians Formula Mascara Wand

The combination of the mascara and extensions do leave you with some seriously large lashes. This pic is a comparison of my everyday mascara and the Physicians Formula Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit, and as you can see the difference is definitely noticeable! If you’re someone who is uncomfortable with falsies, or just plain prefer the ease of mascara over the often tedious effort of applying fake lashes then this Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit is for you!

The Physicians Formula Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit is available at fine drug and mass-market stores nationwide, and retails at about $14.97.

Salicylic Acid vs. Benzoyl Peroxide: Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask Review

I’ve been using anti-acne products with salicylic acid for so long that even though my all of acne never truly cleared up, I thought I had the problem under control and that any acne that resisted the acid was way beyond the aid of modern medicine/science/skincare. Then, four weeks ago I had a massive breakout, and I tried everything to get it to clear up. I mean all my usual treatments and then some. I used astringents, masks, creams, I even tried any combination of the three – it only seemed to exacerbate the issue. Then I went to my doctor and he recommended that I switch over to a product that used benzoyl peroxide instead of the more common salicylic acid.

I turned over every single bottle and tube in the acne treatments section of the skincare aisle – there were very few that didn’t list some percentage of salicylic acid and the only benzoyl peroxide one that I found that sounded perfect was the Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask. Who knew how hard it would be to find a benzoyl product!

Salicylic Acid vs. Benzoyl Peroxide: Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask Review | nyctalon.com

But, what is the difference between Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide? We can get down to the science here like how structurally the basic difference between salicylic acid and benzoic acid is the presence of hydroxyl (-OH) and other really cool chemistry tidbits that my science-y mom explained to me over the phone. But basically, benzoyl peroxide is essentially a combination of benzoic acid and oxygen – the benzoic acid acts as an exfoliant while the oxygen helps kill bacteria that contributes to acne. It’s a deep clean with the potential to dry out the skin, great for under the skin (and pus-filled) acne. Salicylic acid, on the other hand, is friendlier for those with sensitive skin and those who struggle with blackheads. It’s a gentler peeling agent without the bacteria-killing oxygen boost.

Salicylic Acid vs. Benzoyl Peroxide: Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask Review | nyctalon.com

Neutrogena’s Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask can be used as a daily cleanser or an intensive mask. Its active ingredient is 3.5% of benzoyl peroxide (1% over the purportedly effective 2.5% threshold) and the label warns against using it alongside an additional topical acne medication lest drying should occur. I love that it can be used as either a mask or basic cleanser – I’ve used it as both and since I started using it, my skin has looked better than ever!

It’s a no-frills sort of formulation – there are no beads or special oils, no fruits sprinkled on top, no pink splashes of something or other – it’s just a very plain product with very plain packaging, and it’s very effective. It’s a thick white cream, and you don’t need too much to get going. To use as a daily cleanser, you massage into a lather on your skin and rinse; to use as a mask, you apply a thin layer, wait five minutes, and rinse.

This is easily the most important part of my routine now. Clear skin is foremost in my skincare priorities and I really love how Neutrogena consistently is able to provide dependable and effective products. Since I’ve started using the cleanser/mask I’ve seen a significant reduction in my acne – and definitely less intense flare-ups whenever they occur.

The Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask retails at about $6.19 and can be found wherever Neutrogena products are sold. And as always, the information presented here is my opinion based on my personal experience – consult your doctor or dermatologist for skincare advice tailored to your needs. And let me know your experience with Neutrogena and what products you use to tackle acne!

ZIPZ Wine Review

reviewdisclaimer

I first heard about ZIPZ Wine at the Blogger Bash conference last summer, they had been giving away samples to conference attendees who – like me – were absolutely intrigued by their ingenious packaging. Shaped like a wine glass? Portable? Sturdy and leak-free? Yes please!

ZIPZ Wine Review - as seen on Shark Tank! | nyctalon.com

After the conference I found out that they had been on Shark Tank – which I’m sure you’ve heard of – where they made an impressive deal with the Tanks’ Kevin O’Leary. I’ll spare you my thoughts on that particular episode – but suffice it to say that I’m of the opinion that Kevin got away with a plum deal here. Judging by the reactions of Blogger Bash attendees alone, ZIPZ was bound to be a hit.

ZIPZ Wine Review - as seen on Shark Tank! | nyctalon.com

I was recently sent one each of their 4 wine varieties including Chardonnay 2012, Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Pinot Grigio 2013, and Merlot 2012. I still can’t get over how great the packaging is. These are great for taking to the park, or if you’re road tripping and don’t want to risk having a bottle broken. It’s also great for picnics! ZIPZ portions are very generous, about 6.3 ounces – four ZIPZ wines are equal to one bottle of wine.

ZIPZ Wine Review - as seen on Shark Tank! | nyctalon.com

I prefer to use my ZIPZ for cooking and entertaining. They’re so easy to unzip and are completely mess free. I have an issue with opening bottles of wine – I always manage to destroy the cork and it ends up floating in the bottle. With ZIPZ, I just unzip and serve. I recently used the Chardonnay for probably the best mussels I’ve ever made. I used Ina Garten’s recipe as inspiration for mine – and you can find it here if you like – also with fresh pasta from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. It was amazing! And I didn’t have to crack open an expensive bottle of wine to get that great flavor.

You can find out more about the brand here, as well as purchase any (or all) of their ZIPZ Wine varieties!
