6 Ways to Welcome Spring in NYC

One second it’s pouring rain, and the next it’s gorgeous and sunny out – weather like this can only mean one thing – spring has finally come ‘round! It’s time to call up your bestie, emerge from winter hibernation, pop on your sunglasses and get brunching. We’ve pulled together some of our favorite ways to welcome in warmer weather here in NYC! What are your favorite spring spots?

Take a stroll around Central Park…

I know, it’s the most overused recommendation ever. But it’s overused for a reason, we’ve lived here our entire lives and make time to stop by every season, it’s just that gorgeous. Pack up a picnic basket or a light snack and meander on one of the park’s many paths. Feeling a little more adventurous? Head up to 105th street and Broadway to the Conservatory Garden for a real spring treat. The six-acre formal garden opens at 8am and shutters at dusk.

Get cooking!

Cooking School

I love cooking during the spring. The weather is still friendly for baking, and there is an abundance of ingredients available at the farmer’s market to experiment with. Right now Gilt City has two excellent offers for the culinary inclined – learn to make doughnuts, buttery risotto, or Malaysian curry (among other dishes) at Chanterelle Cooking School in the Lower East Side.

Or, if you’ve already mastered the doughnut, you can also head over to Bhagavat Life, a center for holistic living where you’ll learn how to prepare vegetarian cuisine as well as the ancient principles of healthy living. Learn more here.

For the blushing bride…

Brides

I hear spring is the busiest season when it comes to walking down the aisle. On March 31st Brides Magazine is hosting a wedding photography workshop with expert wedding photographer, Brian Marcus. The workshop with teach you all of the insider secrets to the perfect poses – that way you can get your big day pose down pat. Hosted at Condé Nast’s One World Trade Center Photo Studio, the workshop will also feature mini hair trials by Eva Scrivo Salon and mini makeovers by Rouge New York.

Better with brunch!

Ristorante Morini

Sometimes I prefer to let someone else do the cooking for me. Luckily, NYC is chock full of amazing brunch spots. I recommend Bar Primi, Dominique Bistro, Catch, and Ristorante Morini. I love to look to Instagram for brunch/lunch recommendations, so tag me (@nyctalon) if you find a great spot too! My advice, keep an eye out for local deals, it’s a great way to try a new place. Right now you can score a three-course lunch for two for only $50 at Ristorante Morini, I just ate there and it was amazing, check it out here.

And a dash of entertainment…

Gwyneth

Hang out with Gwyneth Paltrow at the Baruch Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, April 12th. The award-winning actress and author will be sharing her new book “It’s All Easy: Delicious Weekday Recipes for the Super-Busy Home Cook”. When you go through this link, you can also score a one-year membership with the Hudson Union, as well as preferred seating, with your ticket purchase.

Do something eventful!

From street fairs to festivals, NYC turns out for the spring. My favorite events are cultural and food events (naturally). The Village Voice is hosting their first annual Brunch Eats Breakfast-For-Dinner Food Event, tickets just started going on sale today – pick them up here and enjoy mouthwatering brunch dishes all aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s Flight Deck! Sounds like an event that is not to be missed!

You could also catch MasterVoice’s Dido and Aeneas on April 28th and 29th, featuring Kelli O’hara, Victoria Clark, Elliot Madore, Anna Christy, and Sarah Mesko – I also hear that the gowns for this performance were designed by Christian Siriano, I bet they’re gorgeous! Tickets on sale here.

You can also pop in to any one of NYC’s amazing museums – I’ve been planning to go to The Frick Collection for ages and I’ve decided this is the year that I go, so I might just see you there!

What are you favorite places to stop by during springtime?

Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg Reveals Her Spring Beauty Tips with Zyrtec & Gilt City

My seasonal allergies act as my yearly reminder that spring has indeed sprung. Just a few days after I noticed my persistent sniffling and watery eyes were not a late-winter cold but just the return of my allergies, I was invited to join celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg and actress Jordanna Brewster for a fun event with Gilt City and Zyrtec who have teamed up with Jamie to offer Gilt City shoppers a sweet promo (more on that in a minute). The event was held at the Crosby Street Hotel, which is one of my favorite spots in the city because the penthouse views are seriously gorgeous, take a look!

Jamie’s tips for making sure that allergies don’t get the best of your beauty routine, include avoiding wiggling the wand (which I admit, I do) when you’ve got allergies as it can cause your eyes to water more and leave you with smudges. She also suggests trying out a flat fan brush instead of wand to apply mascara, if all else fails, use disposable mascara wands each time you apply mascara during the allergy season, it’ll help you avoid allergens and other build-up that can occur on reusable wands.

Jamie also recommends applying cool moisturizer, which may help reduce puffiness caused by allergies. Storing your moisturizer in your refrigerator (I store mine in the butter compartment), and before bedtime remove all your makeup with a gentle cleanser and apply the cool cream to your face to soothe and nourish skin overnight.

My favorite bit of new advice was this – very often oils, allergens, and other residue can build up on the surface of our makeup (and even in our cosmetic bags – so clean those regularly too!). To avoid this issue, Jamie suggests laying transparent adhesive tape over the powder to remove straggling debris from the surface. It’s also a good idea to opt for pencils instead of twist-up products, as every time you sharpen you’ll know that you’re starting off with a clean layer of makeup.

While I didn’t arrive early enough to catch Jordanna, I was able to get a gorgeous and Allergy Face friendly look done by Sarah DiGisco from GLAMSQUAD – thanks Sarah!

Now about that promo I mentioned, right now until May 30th, you can score a free Allergy Face beauty bag (RV $19) when you shop Gilt City’s Beauty in Bloom sale and check out with at least one item. The beauty bag features sample sizes of Aveeno Ultra-Calming Nourishing Night Cream, Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss, Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara, as well as an Allergy Sufferers’ Guide to Spring Beauty and a $10 off coupon for Zyrtec, all packaged in a sturdy cosmetic bag as seen here:

The Beauty in Bloom sale has loads of gorgeous accessories as well as some handy beauty supplies. I love shopping on Gilt & Gilt City, and I’ve already got my eye on a pair of amazing shades – they’d be perfect for spring! Also, while you’re checking out the sale, be sure to enter Gilt City & Zyrtec’s The Ultimate Spring Refresh Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip for two to L.A., a makeover by Jamie Greenberg herself, $1ooo in gift cards and more!

Spinbrush Launches Truly Radiant Clean & Fresh Collection with Alison Sweeney at Flywheel

I’m the sort of person that prefers lounging to lunges, whipped cream to weight lifting, quick naps instead of quick jogs. As it happens, a few weeks ago Arm & Hammer asked me if I would like to take a spin class at Flywheel with Alison Sweeney & Spinbrush. Spurred on by delusions of me spinning my way through a 45 minute workout, I said “sign me up!” My response in the affirmative may have been seriously slightly influenced by the opportunity to meet Sami Brady in the flesh, but the fall-out came afterwards where I repeatedly messaged my friend Nellie from Brooklyn Active Mama about the likeliness of my death-by-spin-class. If you don’t follow Nellie, you definitely should, she’s an amazing lifestyle and fitness expert, plus she’s one of the coolest ladies I know.

Flywheel Spinbrush EventFlywheel Chelsea

Nellie refused to let me chicken out, and joined me as well, and honestly it was a really eye-opening experience. I did not anticipate how much fun I would have, and really did not imagine that I would stay on the bike for the entire 45 minutes – and I did! And it was awesome! Also, it was really cool that Alison stayed there the entire time too!

 Bike Monitor

Alison Sweeney, who is an Arm & Hammer spokesperson, spoke briefly about the new Arm & Hammer Truly Radiant Clean & Fresh collection. The new Clean & Fresh collection features a toothpaste, mouthwash, as well as a battery operated and manual toothbrush. The collection delivers deep cleaning and lasting freshness by way of their patented dual-action brush head, and can be used along with the toothpaste and rinse for a smile that is noticeably whiter.

 Truly Radiant Clean and Fresh

Having been a dedicated spin-brusher for years now, I actually noticed a massive difference between this Clean & Fresh Spinbrush and my older model – this brush moved much quicker, the bristles were very effective but not irritating, and my teeth felt way cleaner. Also, the toothpaste and mouthwash have this great spearmint flavor that lasts all morning, so high-five for fresh breath, haha! Also, if your food features a lot of garlic, this is the collection for you. I love cooking with garlic, and this toothpaste and mouthwash worked like a dream to get rid of that garlic breath and weird flavor, so basically, I’m sold!

Arm and Hammer Truly Radiant Collection

Thank you so much for the invite Arm & Hammer! Since then I’ve already been back for another spin!

How to Live a Life of Plenti

About three weeks ago I attended probably one of the more timely events, at least on a personal level, for me. On a Thursday evening I joined Yoplait’s new Plenti yogurt as well as NYT Best Selling Author Gretchen Rubin, Chef Gabe Kennedy, fitness expert Dasha Libin Anderson, and lifestyle expert Pippa Lord for a private modern wellness workshop. I’m not usually over fond of “life building” advice – maybe it’s because there was a boom of self-help and advice books when I was a kid and I always associate it with not leading a busy enough life that you have time to wonder if you’re doing it right.

LandofPlenti Event

Fast forward to three weeks ago where I was up to my ears in work, and found myself sitting in front of Gretchin Rubin who wasn’t giving useless generic pieces of advice (aren’t those the worst?!) but who was actually sharing some of the best advice on how to manage your time more effectively through habit (a way to make consistent effort in a particular area) building, and how that in turn can make us (me, we) more happier people. It’s actually pretty cool to hear about how each person’s particular personality makes them predisposed to function around expectations a certain way – which also explains how a person like me is more inclined to take care of work and others, but forget to take care of myself too. In fact a ton of people are inclined to do the same.

Plenti EventPlenti Yogurt

Here are two of my favorite takeaways from Gretchin’s session: 1) Gretchen creates a power hour once a week where she works on things she’s been procrastinating, noting that you can do anything for one hour. This sounds so do-able! I have a ton of things I’ve been procrastinating on, and an hour is really such a small cut of time in the frame of my entire week. And 2) One of the most effective strategies for banishing bad habits or changing habits is the strategy of scheduling. Schedule 10-15 min a day to indulge in your bad habit and then let it leave your mind. I loved this tip – now the trick is choosing which of my bad habits to indulge in, haha!

Chef Gabe Kennedy led us on a More Abundant session, where he shared his secret formula for a happy meal – every day you need an in-season vegetable, a green, a lean protein, a healthy fat and a sour food, like Yoplait Plenti Greek yogurt. He added, “One of my food secrets is to eat a “sour” food every day – Greek yogurt like Plenti is a great way to get that sour. Plus, it has my favorite seeds flax and pumpkin.”

Yoplait Plenti Yogurt

Dasha Libin Anderson led the More Fulfilling session, the founder of Kettlebell Kickboxing shared some great fitness techniques that could be done even at the office – and I’ve already started doing them myself and have shared them with my friends! Following that, during the More Interesting session, Pippa Lord encouraged us to do what we value – it’s easy to get so busy that we forget to be real cultured people with interests that can hold valuable conversation with each other. She recommends putting together a culture bucket list, and not being afraid of ditching the chores and spending a day being lazy – I can totally get behind that!

Plenti Lifestyle Advice

Altogether it was great, fulfilling evening – I learned so many great things, and I was able to finally try Yoplaits Plenti yogurt which I now love to have right after work/school when I need that extra boost of energy! Try it – trust me, it tastes amazing!

I’m Not Me When I’m Hungry! SNICKERS® is here to help!

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #WhenImHungry #CollectiveBias

Who are you when you’re hungry? Personally, I want to say something really eery like “your worst nightmare” (*inserts batman voice*) – but something tells me that would sound more creepy than adorably cheesy. But the fact of the matter is that when I’m hungry I tend to do things that I normally wouldn’t. Like walk four miles to get lunch, or completely  forget my term paper on the counter at home. Eventually I wised up to the hunger issue and now I always keep a stash of SNICKERS® around!

Who are you when you're hungry? | nyctalon.com

The summer of last year my sister and I were at the beach, we ended up staying the whole day – which meant our limited store of snacks were gone before lunch came around. I started to get a little hangry, you know that potent combination of hunger and crankiness brought on by lack of snackage, and the only place to get food was miles away. So what did I do? Instead of patiently waiting until we got back to our B&B, I walked four miles to the local convenience store where I loaded up on ice tea and a pile of SNICKERS®. Four miles! In the summer heat! In flip-flops! Oy. I’m not going to even mention my sunburn.

Who are you when you're hungry? | nyctalon.com

The craziness doesn’t end there – when I’m hungry I have a habit of texting my bestie every single food emoji on my phone, it’s as if my texting etiquette falls by the wayside when I’m suffering from hunger. The worst texts are on days where I’m stuck in class or overwhelmed with work and I forget to eat until it’s too late. Luckily for me SNICKERS® is around no matter what is on my plate!

Who are you when you're hungry? | nyctalon.com

Of course now I keep a SNICKERS® in my purse, on a jar on my desk, in the fridge, and in the drawer in the table by the door. And when I run out I swing by CVS and pick up some more.

Who are you when you're hungry? | nyctalon.com

So who are you when you’re hungry? Do you get hangry? Do you forget things (like your grip on reality – because who walks four miles in the middle of July!?)? Let me know! See more great SNICKERS® recipes and fun stories on the SNICKERS® social hub.

Enter the SNICKERS® “Who are you when you’re hungry?” contest by uploading a personal photo or video from your Computer, Facebook, Instagram or use the SNICKERS® Meme Generator to create something new! Voting begins at Noon on 5/11/15 and ends at 11:59:59AM ET on 7/15/15.

ZIPZ Wine Review

reviewdisclaimer

I first heard about ZIPZ Wine at the Blogger Bash conference last summer, they had been giving away samples to conference attendees who – like me – were absolutely intrigued by their ingenious packaging. Shaped like a wine glass? Portable? Sturdy and leak-free? Yes please!

ZIPZ Wine Review - as seen on Shark Tank! | nyctalon.com

After the conference I found out that they had been on Shark Tank – which I’m sure you’ve heard of – where they made an impressive deal with the Tanks’ Kevin O’Leary. I’ll spare you my thoughts on that particular episode – but suffice it to say that I’m of the opinion that Kevin got away with a plum deal here. Judging by the reactions of Blogger Bash attendees alone, ZIPZ was bound to be a hit.

ZIPZ Wine Review - as seen on Shark Tank! | nyctalon.com

I was recently sent one each of their 4 wine varieties including Chardonnay 2012, Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Pinot Grigio 2013, and Merlot 2012. I still can’t get over how great the packaging is. These are great for taking to the park, or if you’re road tripping and don’t want to risk having a bottle broken. It’s also great for picnics! ZIPZ portions are very generous, about 6.3 ounces – four ZIPZ wines are equal to one bottle of wine.

ZIPZ Wine Review - as seen on Shark Tank! | nyctalon.com

I prefer to use my ZIPZ for cooking and entertaining. They’re so easy to unzip and are completely mess free. I have an issue with opening bottles of wine – I always manage to destroy the cork and it ends up floating in the bottle. With ZIPZ, I just unzip and serve. I recently used the Chardonnay for probably the best mussels I’ve ever made. I used Ina Garten’s recipe as inspiration for mine – and you can find it here if you like – also with fresh pasta from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. It was amazing! And I didn’t have to crack open an expensive bottle of wine to get that great flavor.

You can find out more about the brand here, as well as purchase any (or all) of their ZIPZ Wine varieties!

4 Ways to Care for You!

Recently I was sent the new HP X360 – a convertible hybrid laptop with all the bells and whistles. The X360 boasts a 360° flexible hinge, which allows the X360 to be used in laptop mode, tablet mode, stand mode, and tent mode. Basically, it’s amazing. In the spirit of having options, and the four modes of the HP X360, as well as HP’s role in Meghan Trainor’s That Bass Tour which you can check out here (I know, squee! So cool!) – I’ve put together 4 Ways to Care for You – a list that I hope inspires you to give yourself a little TLC!

HP X360 Laptop & Meghan Trainors That Bass Tour! | nyctalon.com

Sometimes I get so busy that I forget to take care of myself. Little things that I like to do for myself like an occasional face mask, or nose strips, or a manicure will fall off my to-do list as I become overwhelmed with different demands on my time. It happens to the best of us. So here’s four easy ways to take a little time out of the chaos of day-to-day and care for yourself!

Buy yourself something! It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, it could be anything from a comfy pair of socks to a bouquet of flowers to a fancy new foundation or even (especially if you’ve been wanting it for a long time) a great new computer (wink, wink)! Taking even a small bit of your budget and getting something for you can make all that hard work seem worth it and can make the daily grind less tiresome.

HP X360 Laptop & Meghan Trainors That Bass Tour! | nyctalon.com

Get dolled up – for you! Break out your best makeup, your falsies, and your nicest outfit. Watch your favorite YouTube beauty guru and try a new, wild, makeup look and have fun. You can go out or just stay in, but it always helps to remind yourself just how fabulous you are. Chances are that you’re your own harshest critic, so how about you #BendTheRules a little and be your biggest fan for a change! Still not convinced? Well, some studies have suggested that those with self-care skills tend to feel better and are even less stressed!

HP X360 Laptop & Meghan Trainors That Bass Tour! | nyctalon.com

Watch an inspiring movie! Now, your definition of “inspiring” may vary – mine can range from ones that make you weep to ones that make you feel buoyant with hope for the future – my sister’s is strictly the latter. Since I’ve gotten my mitts of the HP X360, I’ve taken some time to re-watch some of my old favorites that always leave me feeling happy – like Under the Tuscan Sun, Chocolat, Letter’s To Juliet, The Joy Luck Club, etc. – the Beats Audio speakers mean that I get crystal clear sound every time! These always inspire me on a creative level, and occasionally give me a little bit of much needed perspective.

HP X360 Laptop & Meghan Trainors That Bass Tour! | nyctalon.com

Dance! I’m a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad dancer. I make no bones about my ability to dance, I have two left feet and almost always bust my rear even doing simple steps from my at-home cardio DVDs. I spent my middle school Halloween dance jumping up and down because that was the extent of my public-friendly “moves”. But there is something ridiculously therapeutic about turning up my favorite tunes and dancing by myself, I even do it in the kitchen while I’m cooking. I pop my HP X360 up into tent mode and set my playlist going. It’s so fun, I like to think I dance like Dirty Dancing’s Baby (final scene) even though I know full well I’m definitely pulling an Elaine (Seinfeld).

I hope you get inspired to #BendTheRules and take some time to take care of you! Let me know what are your favorite ways to take care of yourself? Do you have a favorite way to show yourself a little TLC?

Be sure to check out how the HP X360 here! Also, HP has teamed up with Meghan Trainor to cover her entire US tour! You can catch behind the scenes episodes and stay updated by following along with @HP on twitter and using the #BendTheRules hashtag!

Preparing for Financial Success in 2015

As I’ve gotten older my finances have, naturally, become more and more important. As a student it’s so easy to lose track of where you stand financially. Loans can stack up in the background as the most pressing financial decision you make in a month can be whether or not to splurge on a cute (but oh so pricey) pair of shoes. This holiday season I got to thinking about what it means to be financially successful – being able to give myself the gift of financial peace is high on my list of priorities, so if you’re like me in the regard you might want to open up Capital One 360’s Black Friday Sale in a new tab before you continue!

Capital-One-Holidays

It’s so easy to get swept up in the hustle and general busyness of the holidays that it’s easy to lose sight of your financial goals. For me financial peace of mind means being aware of your finances, having a reliable banking resource, and having realistic financial goals. This year I began a journey towards financial success, so I thought I would share with you how you also can prepare for financial success in 2015 too!

Capital-One

Give your personal finances a SWOT analysis. A SWOT analysis is a business planning method that lines out a business’ strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. I think this method could be a great tool when used for personal finances. Think about what are your financial strengths – do you already have a savings account? A steady income? Are you good at budgeting and saving? Personally, being able to see and keep track of my finances with my Capital One account is something I list as a strength. What are your weaknesses? Do you have a weakness for making impulse purchases? Are you a stranger to making a budget? Knowing your strengths and weaknesses are crucial to creating a battle plan.

Capital-One-Black-Friday

Avoid the threat of losing sight of your goal for financial peace this year by taking advantage of the opportunities offered with Capital One’s Black Friday sale! Capital One is decking the halls with financial deals you can bank on including deals on banking, brokerage, and mortgage products! Also, if you refer a friend (or family member) and they sign up, you may be eligible for a $40 bonus for sharing the love.

As someone who banks with Capital One already I love that they’re having a Black Friday sale – it’s always easy to find an atm in the city, and the mobile app has to be the most useful app I have on my phone right now. Plus, Capital One 360 Checking and Savings are not only fee-free, it’s also interest earning!

If you’ve got financial peace on your mind this year, be sure to click here to check out Capital One’s Black Friday Sale!

There’s nothing like starting off the school year with new supplies – this year I’m not only headed to a new school, but I’ve also picked up a new phone that I just adore! I’ve been with Walmart Family Mobile for over a year now, and in my experience it has been the best cheap(est) wireless plan. So when I decided I was in need of a new phone for school, Walmart was the first place I looked. Luckily for me, I spotted the Nokia Lumia 521 on rollback for only $69.88 (down from $99.99)! With the price of textbooks already adding up, I was super excited to find an amazing looking smartphone at such a great price!

College-Friendly-Cellphone-Plan
The Nokia 521 has already become a crucial part of my routine. I desperately needed a phone that I could rely on to keep me organized and on point, and the Nokia is doing just that. It uses the same Windows Live Tiles that I have on my laptop and I’ve been able to sync much of the information that I need – which is essential for any student, I think. Speaking of needs, I do have to tell you the sound quality is quite good – I need something sharp and clear to wake me up on schooldays and this manages to do the job. I’m telling you I’ve slept through hurricanes (Sandy, Irene, I’m looking at you) – but I haven’t been able to sleep through the alarm on this!

Walmart-Family-Mobile-NokiaGreat-Cellphone-for-Back-to-School
I love having the Lumia 521 near me at all times, it’s great for doing a quick search on the traffic conditions or looking up everything from definitions to concepts of chemistry. I even look up youtube videos of how to do a quick hairstyles in the morning when my hair looks awful and I’m running out of time. I think being back in school nowadays really demands a phone that can keep up with students – something fast and effective. And there’s definitely a need for an affordable wireless plan.
Nokia-Lumia-521-Walmart-Family-MobileWalmart-Family-Mobile
That’s where Walmart Family Mobile comes in, with an Unlimited Talk Text and Data/Web service plan for only $34.88 – you really can’t go wrong. I paid a crazy amount of money for textbooks this semester, I’m glad that I can go back to school in style with a sharp looking phone without having to break the bank!

Share Your #newcarface For A Chance to Win From Cars.com!

Have you got a car loan that needs paying? Well, stick around and I’ll share how you can enter to win up to $25,000 off your car loan from cars.com! #sponsored #newcarface

New Car Face Cars.com Logo

There’s nothing quite like getting a new car. I remember being a teen and obsessing about one day having a car of my own – and quite appropriate for a motivated teen of only sixteen years, I was only determined that my first car should be sleek and super fast. I’m not entirely sure what kind of life this imagined car would have been appropriate for (maybe if I was cat woman?), but alas, now that I’m so much older I’ve become far more reasonable and think maybe something that has loads more space for those road-trips I’ve been planning.

My fondest car-buying memory took place years and years ago when my aunt was in the market for a new car. Her old car, which she lovingly referred to as her “baby”, was effectively out of commission and she out-of-the-blue asked me for advice on which car she should buy. To be fair she had narrowed it down to two cars, one a lovely navy blue and one black. I distinctly remember sitting in the black car with her as she weighed the pros and cons of the cars, with the new car smell wafting around us. Don’t you just love that smell? It’s like that new sneaker smell, it’s fairly addicting. I didn’t really give just input except asking her which car she pictured herself driving along with, and which car was most conducive to shopping – but I was just so happy to feel like a part of this important decision. She ended up going with the black car, a cool stick shift, not unlike the car of my dreams.

Do you have a car that’s your home away from home? Or a mini-van that takes your family just about everywhere? Or have you just got your hands on your very first car (congrats!)??? Well, everyone knows Cars.com takes the drama out of car shopping but now they’re taking it out of new cars by paying off someone’s car loan up to $25,000!
