Pixi by Petra’s Holiday Beauty Picks

It’s that time of year! I’m lucky enough to have gotten my mittens (have you broken yours out of storage yet? I sure have!) on Pixi’s newest holiday additions. Holiday collections are always so much fun in my opinion, as they always feature such creative designs. This year, Pixi’s holiday picks have this really beautiful holly and mistletoe design that feels like a lovely modern take on an old-school holiday motif. Honestly, I don’t know what it is about this year but I feel really nostalgic for old-school holidays – maybe I’ve watched Little Women too many times? Can one actually watch Little Women too many times? The answer to that is no. Anyways, enough about my Jo & Laurie obsession, here are Pixi’s prettiest under-the-tree treats and stocking stuffers:

If you’ve used Pixi before than you know that their Endless Silky Eye Pens are amazing. I used to say “they’re money!” in a very Guy Fieri-like manner, but then I was banned from using that term by my family when Guy Fieri became persona-non-grata after an over-enthused Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives binge-fest. It happens. Now I just say that these pens are amazing, and they are. Silky, ideal color payoff, warm blendability, and the color selection – which was great to start with – has now expanded to include this drool worthy rose gold color called OpalOvercoat. Stick it in your mother, daughter, co-worker, beauty addicted friend’s stocking. They will love it. You get a great rose-gold shade with this that is buildable and easy to work with.

The Palette Rosette is an all-in-one colour kit featuring highlighters, eye shadows, and brow shadows, as well as glow, blush, and contour in some very pretty shades. The contour powder looks like a warmer, subtly glowing, version of their Natural Contour Powder. The shadows themselves are very useful basics (the ones you always run out of), great for travel, my sister asked for this in her wishlist – she’s not a big fan of having to root through her makeup bag in the morning and wants a palette like this to streamline her process. It is new to their collection, and I’m not entirely sure if it’s a holiday exclusive – so I would snap it up now just in case.

The real pièce de résistance is the new Fairy Dust Favorites. A tower of high pigmented loose shadows, Fairy Dust Favorites come in two varieties – Metallic Warmth and Matte Classics. I love, love, love that Pixi has Matte Classics – as you know glitter and shimmer is not always ideal, especially if you have more delicate eyelids, so Pixi including this collection of five matte loose eyeshadow pigments scores major points in my book. I was sent Metallic Warmth, which features these beauties:

As you can see, these colors are really rich and beautiful. They show up in tone and in person almost exactly as they look in this pic, with the added metallic dimension. I must admit, was a little apprehensive about the black pigment. I feel like if you buy even the most basic of palettes, you’ll get black eyeshadow. I have so many black eyeshadows that getting another one is not a thrill for me. BUT this pigment does not show up as pure black for me. It has more depth and comes out as this smoky gunmetal that actually makes this shade a completely new one for me. It’s really fun to play with, especially with the deep red and bronze pigments. Speaking of which, I spilled the red all over myself. I looked like the victim of some unfortunate accident and I was utterly devastated that I lost half of the eyeshadow in one go. Somehow I will pick myself up and find a way to soldier on.

If you only get one thing from Pixi from this post, get the Fairy Dust Favorites. I already plan on purchasing the Matte Classics and can see myself repurchasing the Metallic Warmth (especially after the spill!). If you’re buying for someone else, definitely give the palette a look – the value and quality is definitely worth it. And if you’re just looking for a guaranteed winner – that rose gold eyeliner is too cute to ignore.

Anything catch your eye?

Look Flawless this Holiday Season with Jergens BB Body Cream

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a body cream. Ever. If you’ve read this blog you’ll probably know I have always been a fan of the BB cream phenomena, so I was really curious when I heard about Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream. I was able to get my hands (er, legs?) on some, and it is really sort of “that product” I’ve been waiting for!

As far as I recall BB Creams really took the US beauty market by storm starting back in 2012, so it seems about time that someone brought out a quality “do-it-all” cream for the rest of our body as well. Jergens have always had really great gradual tan lotions, but don’t let that confuse you with their BB Cream. The BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream boasts five benefits – that it hydrates, illuminates, evens, firms, and corrects your skin tone.

BB Cream color chart

Here’s my field notes – the product does indeed go on sheer and it does smell an awful lot like their gradual tanners. I’m not a massive fan of the scent, but it wasn’t really overpowering and sort of dissipated as my evening progressed – so not a plus, but also not a deal breaker. As promised, there is absolutely no skin to clothes transfer – at all. This was my first and primary concern, so I was glad that after multiple tests there really was no residue left on my clothes at all.

Jergens BB Cream, BB Cream for the Body, Review

The best part about this cream is that it really leaves your skin looking even and luminous. I tend to get alligator skin right after a shower and I’ve been using this like crazy because as soon as I put it on the redness under my skin definitely tones down and my legs actually look and feel silky. I have to stop myself from pretending I’m in a ridiculous razor commercial with glowing legs – lol! I’ve even taken to applying it to my arms and chest when I wear open cut shirts (calm down, no deep V cuts here folks!).

I recently attended InStyle’s Celebrate InStyle event downtown where I was able to listen to how Pati Dubroff – makeup artist to the stars – uses this cream on her celebrity clients for their red carpet and everyday looks! I definitely think that if you’ve got quite a few events to attend this holiday season – you’ll definitely want to get your mits on this BB Cream. It would also make an amazing stocking stuffer! Also, check out Pati’s presentation below!

You can pick up Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream right now at Target & CVS! Feel free to click here for more information.

Enter to win a Navoh Emily Tote (ARV $100) from Linger Rose! #holidaygiftguide

My most favorite seasons of fashion are fall and winter, but I absolutely love when I find a piece that is so versatile that it’s appropriate for every season. So when I received my Navoh Nicky crossbody bag in yellow from Linger Rose I was super excited. First of all, I think I should point out that the bag was carefully wrapped and shipped wonderfully – in fact, I even received it right after hurricane Sandy and the package was in perfect condition.

Anyways, I absolutely loved the bag – the bright yellow really pops against darker winter outfits and compliments both the lighter and brighter hues that are bound to show up come spring and summer. The Navoh Nicky was very fashion forward, and I should mention also photogenic. I had such a great time shooting photos of the Navoh Nicky for the Linger Rose pages in The NYC Talon’s 2012 Holiday Gift Guide – which you should totally check out by clicking here! Bath & Body Works Fall Mini Candle Rave!

I am completely obsessed with Bath and Body Works’ seasonal candles! I remember when I was a little girl and my mom used to take me to the B&BW at our local mall. I loved testing all the perfumes, lotions, and body soap – and I still do, but right now I’m just completely in love with their candles. As a part of the Influenster Beauty Blogger VoxBox program I was sent a B&BW mini candle in Nutmeg and Spice, along with a coupon code. Being the shopaholic that I am, I immediately went online and put that coupon to good use! I stocked up on about 7 mini candles and one three-wick candle, along with numerous other B&BW goods (I couldn’t help myself, plus they had a sale going on!). So I thought I’d share my review of not only my Beauty Blogger VoxBox candle, but also the other candles in their seasonal line!

White Barn No.1 Nutmeg and Spice – “A warm and cozy fragrance inspired by an elegant mixture of nutmeg and all of autumn’s very best spices”. I have to admit, Nutmeg and Spice was not my favorite candle. It was too heady and reminded me of my 12th grade science classroom (not a good place, trust me).

Cider Lane – “As sweet as the trip to the local apple orchard each year, a delicious fall blend of mulled cider, warm caramel, and sweet cinnamon”. The caramel notes really come through in this candle, and the cinnamon and apple play nice background dancers.

Frosted Cupcake – “A true food-lover’s delight – fresh vanilla bean, sugar, cake batter, and rich buttercream frosting mix it up and create and irresistible scent”. Easily one of my favorite candles ever, Frosted Cupcake smells as good as the description sounds!

Autumn – “On the brink of sweater weather – this inviting fragrance blends dark pomegranate with red apple and notes of fir balsam”. I love this scent so much, I bought both a mini version and the larger three-wick size – the B&BW description is completely accurate.

Cinnamon Sugared Donut – “Share the delight with a homemade vanilla cake donut covered in sugar crystals and crushed cinnamon”. There used to be this bakery near 14th street and 1st avenue that made these massive donut holes – they were so good and warm, always fresh, and only $0.20 each. For me, this candle reminds me of that place, it really smells like a warm cinnamon donut.

Autumn Day – “A crisp, autumn medley celebrating the changing seasons and the beauty of the harvest with notes of fresh cut cedar, juicy fig and sandalwood”. I love, love, love this candle – it smells so much like my dad’s cologne in a warm comforting way. Plus, I love sandalwood –and it plays in so well with the other scents of this candle.

Leaves – “Celebrate the brilliant colors of autumn with this rich blend of golden nectar, red apple and berries”. This smells so much like warm apple cider with cinnamon and cloves, it just makes me wish for Thanksgiving. Definitely another favorite.

‘Tis the Season – “Deep green pine, rich red apples and a touch of cinnamon blend to create a timeless and heartwarming holiday scent”.  I love this scent so much that I burned through my whole mini candle in two days – it just plain smells like Christmas.

Check out B&BW’s online store, Fall line of scented candles, as well as their recently released Christmas/Winter season scents here!

Please remember whenever you burn flame candles like these to place them in a safe stable place away from flammable objects, or things that might tip the candle (and hot wax) over. Also, do not pour out the oil into the sink – you shouldn’t pour out any oil until the wick is fully burned (hot wax can be messy and dangerous if not handled responsibly).

*I received the Nutmeg and Spice mini candle complimentary for testing and review purposes from Influenster. All opinions presented here belong to The NYC Talon, and are not influenced in ANY way (for more info, please see my PR page).

Snyder’s of Hanover Review & FLASH Giveaway! Ends 10/24

I consider myself pretty crafty. I mean I’ve been scrapbooking and card making for years, I’m a frequent Michaels shopper, and I even took a Wilton cake decorating class a couple years ago. However, when I set out to create some amazing themed snacks using only the best ingredients- fondants, frostings, decorative icings, sprinkles, and Snyder’s Pretzels – I figured I’d create some fun treats that would be worthy of their own Martha Stewart Living cover. I was wrong. My genius completely failed me- my peep ghosts on pretzel rods drooped, and my chocolate covered harvest pretzels mysteriously disappeared (I wonder where they went? ;)). However, Shawn and Juliet had a blast creating their own fall themed creations.

It was hard to resist eating all the pretzels while making our treats. I have to admit, the Honey Braided Twists were gone long before the sinfully delicious CakeMate frosting made its way out its convenient packaging. Snyder’s Pretzels have a distinct place in my childhood memories – they were (and are) my grandpa’s favorites, and now they’re also mine. There’s nothing like munching on some Snyder’s while studying, watching a movie, or on a car trip.

Anyways, here are the treats that we created:

Me and Jules decided to make our own mini haunted houses out of Snyder’s Pretzels and frosting – in fact we turned it into a bit of a competition – tell me which house you liked best!

This is mine, I loved using sprinkles and frosting to color the windows, and adding the little sprinkle ghosts and bats – it was so fun and cute!

And here’s Jule’s – she added a whole graveyard element to it!

Making treats like these are super duper easy, I loved looking at Snyder’s pinterest board for inspiration. They have so many brilliant (and easy) pretzel treat ideas on there!

Want to try and make your own pretzel treats? The kind folks over at Snyder’s are offering to give one NYC Talon reader their very own box ‘o treats – just like I received!

Here’s what the winner can expect to receive:

Snyder’s of Hanover Snaps

Snyder’s of Hanover Minis

Snyder’s of Hanover Gluten Free Sticks

Snyder’s of Hanover Rods

Snyder’s of Hanover Honey Wheat Braided Twists

Cake Mate Bakery Icing – White, Orange & Black
Cake Mate Writing Icing Halloween
Cake Mate Tips
CM Halloween 4 Cell Jar
CM Fondant – Primary & Bold
CM Gel – Orange, Black, White, Red
CM Halloween Decors – Monster Mix, Ghoul Mix, Harvest Sprinkle

So, as usual, click the image below to head over to the rafflecopter form (if you don’t see it then scroll down) – and enter to win! This FLASH giveaway ends on the 24th at midnight, and the winner must respond within 24 hours!

*US 18+ only! I received a pretzel pack in order to write this post, no other compensation was received. The opinions expressed here belong to The NYC Talon, and are not influenced in any way (for more info see the PR page above).
