Exclusive Interview with NYM & NYFW Stylist Michele Carrillo!

This fall’s Style 360 Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week runway shows drew quite a crowd of celebrities this year, including Anna Wintour, Coco Rocha, Carmen Electra, etc. As one of the event’s title sponsors, all runway hair looks were styled by Not Your Mother’s Haircare and lead stylist Michele Carrillo. With over 10 years experience in the business as a stylist and makeup artist I was so excited to get to ask Michele a few questions of my own!

The NYC Talon: What is your favorite hair look that you’ve seen on the runway this season?

Michele Carillo: Fave runway hair look this season would have to be sleek & straight behind the ears look I created for Angela Simmons show, for its simplicity. Hair looked chic & sophisticated yet was wearable off the runway and extremely easy to achieve.

TNT: What are your top five styling essentials right now?

Michele: Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak refreshing dry shampoo, Not Your Mother’s Beat the Heat thermal shield spray, a teasing comb with pointed end, Mason Pearson brush and a t3 featherlight hair dryer.

TNT: What look do you think will be popular this fall and winter?

Michele: I believe heading into the fall/winter the beauty industry will be gearing more towards the more “natural look”. With that being said I believe effortless hairstyles will be in, such as a low and sleek ponytail and no fuss tousled hair. Bangs will be back as well.

TNT: Is there a trend or style that you wish would die out? And is there a style that you can’t get enough of?

Michele: As a stylist, there will always be a trend or hairstyle that will feel repetitive day in and day out but I believe that every client can put their own “spin” on it and customize it just enough to make it their own. As for one of my favorite hair looks, it would have to be anything braided. French braids, loose and tousled fishtail braids, milkmaid braids, trendier braided styles such as the look I created for the Walter Mendez collection (WantMyLook/Lilly Ghalichi)…the list can go on and on. Braids can be so versatile! They can go from effortless and casual at the gym to fun and sexy for night time.

TNT: Having over 10 years of experience as a stylist and makeup artist is there something you wish that your clients would ask you and/or are there any tips or tricks you can share?

Michele: Tip/trick: Seems simple enough but clean, damp hair works best for blowouts and day old hair normally works best for up do’s and curled styles.

TNT: What’s your favorite NYM product(s)?

Michele: My favorite NYM products would be: Clean Freak dry shampoo, She’s a Tease volumizing hair spray, Beat The Heat thermal shield spray and Lock Luster Oil Treatment.

Thanks Michele & Not Your Mother’s haircare for the interview!

Kiss Tornado 360: Hair to Dry For!

So I recently had a chance to try Kiss’ new line of hair styling tools – which I was pretty darn excited about because if you’ve read the ‘Talon before then you know that I’m obsessed with the whole line of Kiss Nail Dress and their eyelashes! But because I loved their nail dresses and falsies products I had super high expectations for their hair styling tools, and luckily I wasn’t disappointed at all!

kiss blow dryer

This is the Kiss Tornado 360 1875W Ceramic Tourmaline Ionic Blow Dryer. The blow dryer itself comes with both an air concentrator and a patent pending Tornado Air Booster. It also has three heat settings and three speed settings.

kiss 360 blow dryer

My hair typically takes about 45 minutes to blow dry because not only is it long (my hair ends at the lower end of the middle of my back), but it also retains a lot of water and moisture and doesn’t dry quickly. This means that blow drying my hair is like a feat of magnificent proportions – my arms will tend to get tired and I won’t thoroughly dry my hair. I usually get spaghetti arms halfway through and my hair style suffers because of it. Now it literally took me, with the Tornado Air Booster attachment, ten minutes to thoroughly dry my hair. Ten. Minutes.

This is what the patent pending Tornado Air Booster attachment looks like

If you’ve got long hair like me, I’m positive you understand how it is absolutely awesome having a blow dryer like this is – and even if you have shorter hair that typically dries fast I know as a girl shortening your styling time is invaluable. Plus, the spiraling air flow movements created by the rotating air booster not only unravels wet hair to speed up the drying process, but it evenly distributes heat and helps protect your hair from heat damage!

kiss hair styler

I’m seriously recommending this blow dryer to all ladies out there – avoid fatigue and get your hair dried and styled in less time, all while protection your strands from spot heat damage, what more could you ask for?

If the Kiss Tornado 360 1875W Ceramic Tourmaline Ionic Blow Dryer is any indication of the rest of their heated hair styling tools – then I’m excited to see what else Kiss has got in store for us!

Goody QuikStyle Review

I have pretty long wavy/straight hair – and usually it takes quite a while for my hair to air dry. And recently I’ve been trying to lay off of the heat products just for the sake of keeping my hair from getting irrevocably damaged, plus curling/ironing my hair takes a lot more time than I have these days.

So when Influenster sent me the Goody Quikstyle paddle brush I was really interested in trying a product that claimed it would not only dry my hair faster, but would also help me style it- without heat. Now I normally will roll and pin my hair in a bath towel after my shower in the hopes that it’ll absorb some of that moisture. The starring feature for the Goody Quikstyle brush is that it has absorbent microfiber bristles that work to absorb about 30% of water in your hair – which makes for even faster styling!

Not only to the microfiber bristles absorb some of that excess water, but they’re made with an antibacterial microfiber that keeps the brush clean – although you’ll also want to cleanse it regularly, and when you do make sure to tap the back of the brush to rejuvenate the bristles.

I really enjoyed the design of the brush and found that despite it’s bulky appearance it was not only effective in soaking up water from my hair, and even significantly reducing frizz, but it also felt good in my hand. Turns out, this brush was designed to be lightweight, but effective (with rear-screen ventilation) – while avoiding hand fatigue. The bristles seemed flat after a couple uses, so to remove the hair I ran a fine tooth comb between the rows, which removed stray strands and then I rinsed the brush itself, turning it over and tapping the back until the bristles stood at attention again – it was like new!

The Goody Quikstyle Brush comes in a paddle version – the one I tried, and a convex half-round shape. You can find out more about the brushes here, and if my review hasn’t convinced you that this brush is amazing then please feel free to check out what other Influensters had to say about the Quikstyle brush here! Thanks for reading, and if you have any questions at all about the brush and my experience with it then just drop me a comment below!

naked basics

Naked Basics Palette ($27) – This new palette by Urban Decay is a six shadow palette, an all matte line based off of the infamous Naked palette’s. I have a lot of shadows that have glitter, or are designed to look “luminous”. But I’m a massive fan of matte shadow – especially for the day time.

guilietta tocca candle

Tocca Candle in Giulietta ($38) – My go-to candles are usually from Bath and Body Work’s, which I absolutely love. But this Christmas, it would be nice to get something really special. Tocca candles are a real treat, the Giulietta candle (the pic above is of their popular Bali scent) gives off the scent of green apple and pink tulip – and has a burning time of 60 hours.

Beauty Blogger VoxBox Review!

If you’ve been keeping up with my most recent posts, you might have noticed that a few of my reviews mentioned that I received the featured product by way of my Beauty Blogger VoxBox- and I just wanted to share the full details on what was inside my Beauty Blogger VoxBox as well as my overall impression with you guys :)

Inside my Beauty Bloggers VoxBox I received an NYC New York Color IndividualEyes Limited Edition Compact, Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin, a Bath & Body Works Fall Mini-Candle, Kiss Ever Pro Lash Starter Kit, a sample/travel sized tube of Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream, samples of Boots No7 Beautiful Skin Cleanser and Night Cream for Normal/Dry skin, and a packet of eBoost supplement.

The box was stocked generously with some pretty impressive products that I just knew I’d love – I thought I’d include my general impression  of each product, but please feel free to click on each products name for my full review/run down!

NYC New York Color IndividualEyes Limited Edition Compact: I loved the dark colors that Influenster sent my way. I was already in the market for grey eyeshadow to complete a smoky eye look that I was going for, so I was pleased to receive this compact. The color payoff was great, and my one complaint is that the included primer was too oily. Other than that, the IndividualEyes is a great compact with an even greater price.

Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin: I’ve been using these spin pins since I received them – that’s how much I love them. They’re super easy to use, and don’t pull on my hair like ponytails do. They’re great stocking stuffers!

Bath & Body Works Fall Mini-Candle: I received the White Barn No.1 in Nutmeg and Spice and I flat out did not enjoy this candle. It gave me a terrible headache and smelled too thick and heady. However, using the coupon included in my VoxBox, combined with a sale on B&BW’s website I was able to score quite a few mini candles (see the full post for my review of each scent here) and since that post, have burned half of them through. My favorites are Autumn, ‘Tis the Season, and Cinnamon Sugared Donut.

Kiss Ever PRO Lash Starter Kit: I loved these lashes – easy to apply, and ultra glamorous, what more could a girl ask for???

Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream: If you get a chance to buy/try this cream then please do! I loved how well this cream worked (teaser: there are pic’s in my full review here!) and still can’t get over how fun it is to have beautiful, envy-worthy curls!

Boots No7 Beautiful Skin Cleanser and Night Cream for Normal/Dry skin: I’ve long heard of this brand and was completely thrilled to finally have a chance to try it. Boots No7 definitely lives up to the hype and I totally plan on trying more of their makeup and skincare offerings.

I have to say- I really really loved this box. I do review a lot of beauty products on here, so getting to try news ones and letting you know if they’re worth the hype is always a treat! I loved discovering a new cleanser and lotion, and using the spin pin, and even getting some curls out of my hair with Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream – so if you’re active on social media and would be interested in the Influenster VoxBox program, leave me your email address in the comments below! The Curl of My Dreams with Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream!

For all my life I’ve wanted to have curly hair. Unfortunately, out of all my mom’s daughters, I was the only one born with straight hair. My sisters have curls ranging from corkscrew curls to romantic loose curls – but me, no such luck. Every other week I’ll pull out my curling iron and cook my stubborn hair into curls – which never really turns out well, and I often resemble Courage the Cowardly Lion until the weight of my hair and gravity straightens out my hard won curls on its own. Still, I’ve never given up the dream, and was super excited to try the Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream sample in my Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox.

I was super surprised at how well this works – I applied the cream to my hair after taking a shower and slept with my hair in a loose bun, and the next morning I woke up with beautiful (natural looking) bouncy curls! They weren’t overdone – and my hair smelled insanely good. Gorgeous curls minus the heat damage, you can’t ask for much else. I used the cream on my sister’s hair, saturating her wet hair from root to tip, flipping it over and blow drying her hair with a diffuser. It came out looking so good and shiny; I just had to share a pic with you!

Not Your Mother’s Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream has grapeseed and jasmine flower extract that eliminated frizz and flyaways and adds extra bounce to your curls. I love this cream, it works so well that I cannot wait to try the rest of the Not Your Mother’s line of products – find out more about Not Your Mother’s and the rest of their line on their website here!

Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin Review!

My little sister is a ballerina so buns are a pretty popular hair-style ‘round these parts. Personally, I don’t ever really sport a bun – my hair has always been too slippery to stay in place properly. I’m one of those people who hates to feel like my hair isn’t secure – which is why when my hair isn’t down, I often opt for a good ‘ol fashioned ponytail. However, I was pretty excited to try the Goody Spin Pin that I received in my Influenster Beauty Bloggers VoxBox- the pins looked so cool (and spinny – is that even a word?) that the allure of trying it out and attempting to put my hair in a bun was irresistible.

What you do is, you brush your hair up into a ponytail, then you curl/twist your hair around itself (or your finger) until you have a bun, then you tuck the tail end of your hair into your bun, holding the bun in place twist one spin pin downward from the top of your bun (you’ll want to actually twist this in, much like twisting a bottle cap close), then take the other pin and twist it upward from the bottom of your bun – that’s it! Viola- a perfect bun! Quick tip here – use a little hairspray before brushing your hair up, it helps tame frizz, fly-aways, and maintains the look longer. However, if my explanation doesn’t cut it, check out this vid here:

I have to say these spin pins are pretty darn cool – and what’s even better is that even slippery straight hair like mine will stay in! It creates a perfect, sturdy, chic bun – that even ballerina’s like my sister can appreciate! I already went to CVS and bought some for her – they make amazing stocking stuffers too! I’m happy to say that with the help of Goody’s Spin Pin I can actually appreciate the understated simplicity of a bun – its super cute, and totally keeps my hair out of my face! Love it!

The Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin retails at around $7.29 and comes in a light/dark hair variation. For more information check out Goody’s site here!

Country Life Maxi Hair Supplement Review

Back in the beginning of summer I had a bit of a crisis. I could have sworn that I was losing my hair. There seemed to an influx in hair left on my brush, and down my shower drain. As somebody who has lived her whole life with lush locks I was pretty nervous about my sudden hair loss. I was concerned enough about it to do some serious “hair-loss” googling! Then BlogHer happened and I was too caught up in that to pay much attention to anything else. However, then fall started and I headed back to school – and I noticed it again. My hair seemed thinner, and less life-like then before. Maybe it was stress? Or maybe I wasn’t getting enough vitamins?

Lucky for me, I had the chance to try Country Life’s Maxi Hair Supplement! I know, I know – this might sound like a cheesey ad- but- I would have never considered taking a supplement unless I had received it in my Naturals Vox Box. In fact, even when I had received it I was a little skeptical. I have pretty strong and healthy nails, and my skin isn’t terrible or anything- so I was reluctant to add yet another thing to my morning routine. But like a good product tester, I obediently tested.

In the three weeks that I’ve been using Country Life’s Maxi Hair I’ve noted a welcome change. It looks like my hair loss has been reduced to a normal level. I’m definitely seeing less of it in the shower, and on my hairbrush. In fact, it’s also gotten some serious shine going on – it’s looking really healthy! Even the tips of my nails are looking whiter, and healthier!

Overall, I’m really happy about Country Life’s Maxi Hair supplement – the pill’s a little big, and has a strong smell, but these are minor issues. I would definitely buy them again! But don’t just take my word for it- read what other influensters have to say about the supplement here – and check out the other products that Country Life has to offer here!
