Get Out & About: NYC Events this September

exclusivepreview(1)

In my opinion fall is New York’s best season, it’s the perfect time to wander around and enjoy the city. You could also head up to the Hudson River Valley and go apple picking or on a wine tasting tour – basically, it’s the most ideal time to enjoy the best of New York, it’s when I consider myself the luckiest to live here. This month, the season of social activities kicks off with some great events, so if you’re not too busy during New York Fashion Week or too exhausted after it you’ll definitely want to check these out*:

Weekend Getaways with the MTA LIRR -

Montauk Tour

Getting away has never been easier thanks to the MTA! My family usually goes on an MTA getaway every fall. This year Long Island is looking like a great destination too! Right now Gilt City is offering discounted tickets for a Montauk Tour, Wine Country Tour, and Oyster Festival – don’t miss out. Kick off cooler weather with a perfect day adventure (prices $3-67, more info here).

Restaurant Review: Ristorante Morini

A typical day for me involves taking a rather long, but not arduous, journey uptown by way of Madison Avenue. There are worse avenues to travel. And every day, for quite sometime, I pass Ristorante Morini and make mental notes to eat there. Thanks to Gilt City, I finally got my chance. Being of the kind that spends hours reading Yelp reviews and following food blogs, I was well aware that Ristorante Morini was not only one of the restaurants belonging to Michael White’s Altamarea Group but also that it had a pretty darn good reputation. And judging by my experience it’s a reputation that’s well-earned.

Ristorante Morini BarRistorante Morini

Upon entry, the first thing you’ll notice about Ristorante Morini is their gorgeous bar, which adds character to the white tablecloth atmosphere. The restaurant does consist of two levels, with the top accessible by elevator. Drawing a fair, but not crushing crowd, their prix fixe lunch menu is one of the better ones that I’ve seen in the city. For our appetizers my guest, Rosemary from NYC Style & A Little Cannoli, had Bocconcini – tomato-braised chicken-eggplant meatballs with mozzarella di bufala and garnished with torn basil.

Ristorante Morini Chicken MeatballsRistorante Morini Meatballs

The meatballs were insane – perfectly tender, and packed with flavor. They tasted like they had some kind of sausage in them, but I’m not certain. I had the Tonno – bigeye tuna tartare, crispy fingerlings, radish, and parsnip crema. I’m a massive tartare fan, so I eat tuna pretty often. This tartare was fresh, and I loved the texture added on by the crispy fingerlings, but the most spectacular addition to this tartare was the crisped capers. They tasted like they had been briefly pan fried, which gave this instant pop of saltiness that enhanced the whole dish.

Ristorante Morini Tartare

For our main, she had grilled sea bass, served with cauliflower, pine nuts, golden raisins, and saba. The dish was plated beautifully, and according to Rosemary, very delicious. I had the Milanese, a crispy veal cutlet wrapped in bruschetta, and served with aged balsamico and cream spinach. I loved it, it’s so filling that I couldn’t even finish all of it (which rarely happens, haha!).

Ristorante Morini Sea Bass

For dessert we had the Budino – a sweet italian custard or pudding – this one featured Gianduja, chocolate crema, banana, and hazelnut gelato. Rosemary had the Panna Cotta, one of my favorite desserts, this was a vanilla panna cotta with citrus, pistachio, toasted meringue, and blood orange granita.

Ristorante Morini DulceRistorante Morini BudinoRistorante Morini Panna Cotta

The toasted meringue were so tiny and perfect! They were really reflective of the entire meal which was clearly executed perfectly and done with attention to every detail. I cannot wait to bring my friends and family here – next time I’m definitely trying their pasta, which I’ve heard nothing but good things about! Want to dine at Ristorante Morini yourself? Right now Gilt City had an amazing deal for dinner and brunch at Ristorante Morini – check them out here! While you’re there be sure to check out Gilt City’s other local offerings!

Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg Reveals Her Spring Beauty Tips with Zyrtec & Gilt City

My seasonal allergies act as my yearly reminder that spring has indeed sprung. Just a few days after I noticed my persistent sniffling and watery eyes were not a late-winter cold but just the return of my allergies, I was invited to join celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg and actress Jordanna Brewster for a fun event with Gilt City and Zyrtec who have teamed up with Jamie to offer Gilt City shoppers a sweet promo (more on that in a minute). The event was held at the Crosby Street Hotel, which is one of my favorite spots in the city because the penthouse views are seriously gorgeous, take a look!

Jamie’s tips for making sure that allergies don’t get the best of your beauty routine, include avoiding wiggling the wand (which I admit, I do) when you’ve got allergies as it can cause your eyes to water more and leave you with smudges. She also suggests trying out a flat fan brush instead of wand to apply mascara, if all else fails, use disposable mascara wands each time you apply mascara during the allergy season, it’ll help you avoid allergens and other build-up that can occur on reusable wands.

Jamie also recommends applying cool moisturizer, which may help reduce puffiness caused by allergies. Storing your moisturizer in your refrigerator (I store mine in the butter compartment), and before bedtime remove all your makeup with a gentle cleanser and apply the cool cream to your face to soothe and nourish skin overnight.

My favorite bit of new advice was this – very often oils, allergens, and other residue can build up on the surface of our makeup (and even in our cosmetic bags – so clean those regularly too!). To avoid this issue, Jamie suggests laying transparent adhesive tape over the powder to remove straggling debris from the surface. It’s also a good idea to opt for pencils instead of twist-up products, as every time you sharpen you’ll know that you’re starting off with a clean layer of makeup.

While I didn’t arrive early enough to catch Jordanna, I was able to get a gorgeous and Allergy Face friendly look done by Sarah DiGisco from GLAMSQUAD – thanks Sarah!

Now about that promo I mentioned, right now until May 30th, you can score a free Allergy Face beauty bag (RV $19) when you shop Gilt City’s Beauty in Bloom sale and check out with at least one item. The beauty bag features sample sizes of Aveeno Ultra-Calming Nourishing Night Cream, Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss, Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara, as well as an Allergy Sufferers’ Guide to Spring Beauty and a $10 off coupon for Zyrtec, all packaged in a sturdy cosmetic bag as seen here:

The Beauty in Bloom sale has loads of gorgeous accessories as well as some handy beauty supplies. I love shopping on Gilt & Gilt City, and I’ve already got my eye on a pair of amazing shades – they’d be perfect for spring! Also, while you’re checking out the sale, be sure to enter Gilt City & Zyrtec’s The Ultimate Spring Refresh Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip for two to L.A., a makeover by Jamie Greenberg herself, $1ooo in gift cards and more!

Beer & Cheese at Beecher Cheese with Gilt City

Cheese is basically one of my love languages. I have an overwhelming fondness for cheese that manifests itself by way of weekly cheese-eating sessions complete with a hipster-approved marble and slate board towering with Gouda, Mozzarella, Cheddar, Goat, Buffalo, grapes, dried fruit, nuts, the works. So, naturally, when Gilt City asked if I’d like to attend a Beer & Cheese Class at Beecher Cheese I said “yes”!

Beecher Cheese NYC Gilt City

I have to admit, prior to the class I had heard a lot about Beecher Cheese, especially about their mac & cheese. But I was totally unprepared with how drool-worthy the store actually smells. When you walk through the doors you are instantly hit with the most comforting scent of butter and cheese – it’s pretty amazing (especially if you love cheese, mac & cheese, and anything decadent and comforting). As I’m writing this I am literally kicking myself with regret (okay, not literally) because I didn’t get any of their famed mac!

Beecher Cheese NYC Gilt City

Despite my pasta-less evening, I had an amazing time at the class. I am not a beer aficionado. I couldn’t tell you what a hop was if my life depended on it, I probably can’t even pour a beer correctly (assuming there is a right way to pour it). But you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy these classes – the “instructors”, or as I like to call them “genius food guides”, are obviously experts in their subjects but they are so personable that you don’t even notice that you’re learning!

Beecher Cheese NYC Gilt City

I learned the difference between an ale and lager, found out so many interesting beer history tidbits, and – thanks to Beecher Cheese’s resident Cheesemonger – I also found the answer to one of my most pertinent cheese questions ever – what exactly are those crystals that make my favorite aged gouda so darn amazing? Turns out those crystals are neither salt nor sugar as I had suspected. They’re actually composed of tyrosine – non-essential amino acids that form with age, and they’re often added into the cheese during the cheesemaking process. I also found out that there’s pretty much an underground group of cheesemakers that are not only incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about everything cheese, but they also meetup at a warehouse (usually in Long Island City) for an epic cheese competition with competitors from around the globe. Um, cheese experts, where can I get a ticket?

Altogether it was an incredibly fun evening, I learned so much. Even if you’re there just for the beer & cheese, it’s so great to listen to people who are passionate about what they do, plus the cheese was amazing (of course). I love that Gilt City features these sort of experiences – it’s such a great way to get out, get to know your city, and do and try new things! Thanks for having me Beecher Cheese, I cannot wait to return (and finally try that mac)!
