Skeeter Snacks Review and Giveaway! 2 Winners, Ends 2/1

I’m an avid snacker, but more than anything I love having cookies and milk. Nothing beats the classic after-school snack, one of my all-time favorite cookies are from Skeeter Snacks. Perfectly buttery, yummy, and crunchy their cookies are simply put, amazing. One of my most favorite treats, Skeeter Snacks are more than just yummy cookies, they are actually peanut and tree nut free cookies!

skeeter1

Right now an estimated 4% of American adults and 8% of children suffer from food allergies. With peanut and tree nut allergies affecting the majority of this population, an average of about 6 million adults and children have a peanut and/or nut allergy. So chances are you’ve probably heard about the precautions that must be taken for those that have such allergies. Maybe your child’s school no longer allows peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or maybe your kid isn’t allowed to bring in peanut M&M’s – the fact is is that something as harmless as a peanut can in fact end a person’s life. There are those who are severely allergic, and unfortunately many many snacks, treats, food, and sweets are made in facilities that process nuts and therefor make their product inedible for those adults and kids who are allergic to them.

There are brands and products out there that produce peanut and tree nut free snacks, but all too often they taste well, tasteless, and cost an arm and a leg. Skeeter Snacks is completely different, they’re reasonably priced and taste absolutely amazing! I would have never guessed that they were nut free if the adorable little Skeeter Squirrel’s (the only squirrel with a nut allergy) placard hadn’t suggested it.

Skeeter Snacks comes in Chocolate Chunk, Golden Oatmeal, Skeeter Doodle, and Chocolate Cubed. I don’t have any nut allergies, but I’m in love with these cookies! They are all seriously delicious, and they have the approval of both the kids and adults in my family. In fact we’ve already decided to switch from our mainstream well known popular brand of chocolate chip cookies and buy Skeeter Snacks instead. We all love that Skeeter Snacks as brand not only produces an amazing product, but that they provide resources and information for kids and adults wanting to learn more, or who are looking for support in being proactive about peanut/tree nut allergies.

Now about those cookies, I tried to find a favorite but I really just couldn’t choose. The Golden Oatmeal was just this warm mellow sweet oatmeal-y cookie that brought me right back to my childhood, when my mom used to give my sister and me oatmeal cookies while we did our homework. The Skeeter Doodle’s were super yummy – they had crystallized sugar on top, were super buttery, and had this great crunch. I’d say they are the ideal tea or coffee cookie. The Chocolate Chunk was really good – the perfect crunchy CCC.  And the Chocolate Cubed delivered some serious chocolate flavor – I loved how the cookie was crunchy but the chocolate chips were melty, I don’t know how the folks at Skeeter managed to do that but it was so good! And yes, all of them make a perfect afternoon snack with a glass of cold milk!

Now here’s that giveaway you’ve all been looking forward to, lol! Skeeter Snacks had been kind enough to offer TWO of my lucky readers and chance to try each of Skeeter Snack’s cookies! How cool is that? Here’s how to enter to win:

Petit Amuse: December 2012

I know this is late, but I thought I’d post my review of the December Petit Amuse box – now you guys know how much I love this foodie box, and I was particularly excited about their December box because that seems like the time of year that most subscription services pull out all the stops. Also, it gave me a chance to shoot a couple pictures using the new food-themed background that I created as a canvas for photos – let me know what you think!

petit4

Petit Amuse is curated artisan treats box – they don’t offer as many product samples as Love with Food, but what they do offer is a chance to try and support small-batch food processors. I’m not going to compare the two, because I love them both and I feel like they offer two completely different foodie experiences.

In December’s box I received a jar of Champaign Valley Apiaries Crystallized Honey. I was super excited about this – not only was the sample significant, but I’m also a major connoisseur of honey (or most anything sweet & tasty) so getting to try a new kind was pretty exciting.  Crystallized honey is a thicker form of honey, nutty and sweet, Champaign Valley Apiaries Crystallized Honey makes an exceptional spread (seriously, get yourself some honey, a baguette, and some jam and you’ll be all set!).

I also received a pretty little tin of Coco-Zen Chocolates – I love that Coco-Zen is not only made from organically grown cocoa but they are also a fair trade certified product. Unfortunately I never had a chance to try them because, in keeping with the season, I gifted the chocolates to a family member – however, she told me that they were amazing!

I’ve never been much of a nougat fan, so this is in no way a bad review. The Va de Bon Coeur Nougat was packaged prettily, but it just didn’t do it for me. However, Va de Bon Coeur nougat has received glowing reviews from Gourmet Weekly and Edible Green Mountain – and it’s reasonably priced!

Interested in trying out Petit Amuse for yourself? Click here to subscribe, for only $10 a month (plus $2 shipping) you can try seriously decadent treats, and support small, local, brands!

*I was not compensated in any manner for this box. I bought the box, and I blogged about it – thanks for reading!

Love with Food: November 2012

This month’s Love with Food box was curated by TLC star Amy Roloff (of “Little People, Big World”) and was fairly packed with some pretty darn good treats! This box had a Thanksgiving theme that was pretty cute, and included 8 product samples – which is more than most boxes will include. Anyways, without further ado, here is what was in Love with Food’s November box:

A Dark Chocolate Truffle Piglet from Hagensborg Chocolates, Inka Corn from Inka Crops, Chocolate Chunk Cookies from Skeeter Snacks, Mango Pear Pineapple squeezable snack from Fruit.o, Mini Blueberry Almond Crunch from Mrs.May’s, Turkey Bak Kwa Jerky from Little Red Dot Kitchen, Original Mulling Spices Blend from the Aspen Mulling Co., and Pumpkin Spice Decaf. Tea from Stash Tea Company.

Out of this whole box there was only two brands that I was already familiar with – which is great, because Love with Food is essentially a food discovery subscription box service. Now I am already a massive fan of Stash Tea, and always have some in my cupboards nowadays. But I had yet to try their new seasonal Pumpkin spice tea – which I absolutely fell in love with! It tastes like thanksgiving in a cup. I also knew about Skeeter Snacks. I had discovered them in the swag exchange room at BlogHer and cannot get enough of these totally nut-free cookies- so even though I had tried them before, I was super thrilled to see them featured in this month’s box!

The Inka Corn is really really yummy – it gives you plenty of tactile stimulation, and tastes like movie theatre popcorn! Harvested from non-GMO crops, Inka Corn has only three ingredients (corn, palm olein, and sea salt) and makes a great snack. My mom also has a Love with Food subscription, so I was able to pilfer her Truffle Pig and try both the dark chocolate and milk chocolate versions – the packaging and truffle shape is adorable, and the chocolate was pretty good too (the dark one has a stronger, more chocolate taste).

I have yet to try the turkey jerky and mulled spice blend – I’m saving the spices for Thanksgiving apple cider! The Mrs.May’s mini crunch had great packaging, and the product was cut into perfect little squares – but I can’t say that I was overly impressed with its taste or flavor. And the Fruit.o was great, I’m such a big fan of squeezable fruit since I tried the GoGo Squeeze in last month’s LwF box so I was thrilled to try a new brand this month. Fruit.o is almost like the grown-up version of GoGo Squeeze, they’re both super yummy and super convenient.

Altogether the box was amazing – so kudos to Amy Roloff and LwF! Want to try out Love with Food for yourself??? Now until 11/30 you can use the code ‘HOLIDAY12’ and get $5 off any Love with Food subscription plan! That means you would get your first box for only $7!!! It would be super if you could use my referral link here if you decide to give LwF a try!

I can’t wait to see what LwF has in store for December – to see my review for their December box, make sure you subscribe via email, twitter, and/or facebook and never miss an update! Comments are always welcome!

Fat Witch Brownies NYC

I’ve always been a sucker for a good brownie. However, despite my impressive cookin’ skills the only person in my house who can throw down a good brownie is my older sister. Unfortunately, she didn’t like the last time I tried to chain her down to the kitchen stove and force her to make me a mountainous heap of chocolately treats. Alas, I’ve had to turn to alternate sources of sugar income. Luckily, NYC is choc-full of places to satiate my brownie cravings. My most favorite of them is Fat Witch Bakery.

Located in Chelsea Market, Fat Witch’s legendary brownies are the stuff of dreams. My personal favorite is the turtle witch – a super rich brownie with pecans and a heavy helping of caramel. Their store, in a prime foodie location, is the epitome of simplicity. No heavy branding or wild colors are needed here to draw in customers- the product speaks for itself.

Having enjoyed the fruits of Fat Witch, I would totally encourage any NY’er or visitor to stop by their store- it’s the only place where you can get their fresh bakery brownies (these aren’t advertised on their website, so you can’t get them any place else). My recommendations are the turtle witch, caramel witch, the original fat witch, and the walnut witch. They’re the perfect brownie- dense, sweet, decadent, chocolately, yum.

Don’t live in NYC, and not heading here any time soon? That’s okay- Fat Witch ships! Every brownie ships ready to eat- and contain no preservatives! They also have a cookbook- which I can personally vouch for. I’ve tried brownies made with their recipe book- they are amazing and taste just as good as the ones in store. A used copy costs around $7 on amazon.

Love With Food July Box Review – Or Don’t Judge a Box by its Cover

Initially, upon receiving the box I thought the only thing I could look forward to was the fudge. I was nonplussed by the small packages I mistakenly took for a handful of samples. Boy was I wrong. Love with Food’s July box was one of the most fun and interesting foodie boxes I’ve received so far! So let’s dig in…

Here’s what I received: One bag of Organic Blue Corn “TorChia” Chips by Whale Tails, three YummyEarth Lollipops, a jar of Chipotle Ketchup with Organic Agave Nectar by Montebello Kitchens, one package of Sweet Corn Crunch – Dried Snack by Sensible Foods, a pouch of Sweet Orange & Citrus Sunburst Green Iced Tea by Mighty Leaf Tea, a pack of Organic Spring Jasmine Tea also by Mighty Leaf Tea, a handful of Patriotic Poppers (candy), and last but not least Milk Chocolate Hot Fudge Dessert Topping by Sanders Candy.

First of all, anybody would love the tortilla chips from Whale Tales- why? Because they are literally shaped like a whales tail! They’re super cute, so kudos to Whale Tails clever product design. Stone ground organic blue corn infused with nutty chia seeds makes these chips not only a healthy, but a hearty, and crunchy snack.

.
The younger sib’s got to the YummyEarth Lollipops and the Patriotic Poppers- which they claim tasted great!

.

I’ve heard a lot about Mighty Leaf Teas in magazines and all over the interwebs, but hadn’t actually had a chance to try it until now. So is it worth the hype? In a word- yes.

.
The most surprising product that I’ve completely fallen in love with is the Sweet Corn Crunch snack. It’s so good, it’s pretty unbelievable how good it is – especially because it’s such a simple product. The ingredients literally read “%100 Sweet Corn, Sea Salt and Nothing Else.” – but everybody in my house, and I’m talking people of all ages, LOVED this. Low fat, gluten free, low calorie, naturally sweet and tasty- this is a super grab and go snack and now one of my favorites!

.
The last product I received was the Milk Chocolate Hot Fudge Dessert Topping by Sanders. If I were to hoard something ever in my life, this would be it. Sweet, chocolatey, with the distinct mellow flavor of being made with cream – well, I’m guessing here, as their recipe for this one has been kept a secret for over 100 years -  Sanders has managed to bottle pure happiness with their dessert toppings!

Friday Night Consolation Chocolate Bread Pudding

Have no date? Nothing to do on a Friday night? Well then make this fast and easy chocolate bread pudding- this consolation prize will make all your really-busy-’cuz-I-have-a-life-friends super jealous and break up with their lousy boyfriends and want to spend their Friday nights eating this with you. But their sudden stroke of genius will be too late, because you’ve already used your magic bread pudding to wheedle your way through the stomach and into the heart of that cute trust fund baby you’ve had your eye on since for-evah!

.
I credit my mum (no I’m not British, but it’s really fun to say mom that way) with this recipe. It’s pure delicious genius!

Friday Night Consolation Prize Chocolate Bread Pudding
4 cups of brioche bread cut up into chunks
2 bars of milk chocolate Scharffen Berger cut up into pieces
5 eggs
1 cup of heavy cream
3 cups of milk
1  cup of white sugar
1/4 cup of brown sugar
2 tsp. of Vanilla extract
zest of 1 orange
Butter casserole pan. Put chunked up bread into pan in layers alternating with the pieces of Scharffen Berger. You want to disperse the chocolate so that when you bite into the bread pudding you have a chocolate chunk here and there. Lastly mix all the remaining ingredients in a large bowl, mixing really well. Then pour it over the bread chunks in the buttered casserole. If need be and if the bread is still too dry you may add extra milk (1/4 cup max).
Put in 350 oven for 35 minutes until puffy and golden. Viola! Yum to da tum:)

This is what it looks like right out of the oven- yum!

Love That Box! My “Love With Food” Box Review

I just received a new box! For more on what kind of box I’m talking about, check out this post here, then come back and continue reading! And this time it wasn’t a beauty box or a nail polish subscription box- this time I loaded up on food! Do you think all these exclamation marks are conveying how excited I am about the Love With Food box?!

I signed up for a Love With Food box a little while ago, I had read a lot of good reviews for this box on other blogs and decided to try it for myself. At $14 a month, every box box that is bought is matched by Love With Food with a donated meal to Share Our Strength, to feed hungry kids in America. Every box contains 5-6 gourmet samples, which if you like them you can go back to the site and buy the full sized versions at discount prices with free shipping. Now on to my box.

As a part of this month I received samples of Honey Bunny Graham’s by Annie’s, Caramel Wrapped Pretzel Petite’s by Mom’s Originals, Organic Chocolate Fusions by The TeaRoom Chocolate Company in four flavors: Pina Colada Milk Chocolate, Masala Chai Milk Chocolate, Mayan Pepper Chai Dark Chocolate (60%), and Midnight Mocha Dark Chocolate (72%), I also received Rich Basil + Raspberry Vinegar by Oliovera, Meyer Lemon Extra Virgin Olive Oil also by Oliovera, Masala Chai Blend by Impra Tea, and a few Hazelnut Chocolate Eggs by Ferrero.

The packaging was adorable, admittedly, I was surprised at how small the box was. But boy ‘o boy was I surprised at how chock full of valuable samples this sucker was. Four out of the six brands represented in this box were brands that I had never heard of, and five out of six were brands that I had never tried. Why am I mentioning this? Well, because the whole point of sample boxes is that you’re introduced to products or brands you otherwise had not known or tried before- it’s the thrill of discovery! It’s like being the Columbus of gourmet goodies!

My favorite product out of the whole box had to be the olive oil and vinegar by Oliovera. The size of the sample was massive, sturdy, glass bottles. And the product itself was delicious! The Meyer Lemon Extra Virgin Olive Oil is insane that’s how good it is. It practically screams Spring, and begs to be drizzled over tomatoes and mozzarella. As for the Rich Basil + Raspberry Vinegar, this would be an amazing salad dressing- the flavor of the basil and raspberry really shine through in the vinegar.

As for the other products, the tea was amazingly aromatic and smelled of cardamom, cloves, and dried mint- definitely perfect for tea drinkers or chai lovers. The Caramel Wrapped Pretzel Petite’s are adorable and I would totally recommend them as favors for parties, weddings, or gatherings. The Organic Chocolate Fusions really reminded me of one of my favorite computer games- Chocolatier, in which you as the player come up with and manufacture unique chocolate creations just like the one’s that The TeaRoom Chocolate Company have created in real life. The samples I received were cleverly packaged chocolate pastels, which made it convenient to taste the different flavors. In all honesty, I have to say this was some of the best chocolate I’ve tasted in a while (and that’s saying a lot). They’re very distinct  flavors that leave a mellow but welcome aftertaste in your mouth. As for the Ferrero Eggs, and the Annie’s Graham’s- both were irresistibly yummy snacks!

So if you’re looking for a food box, or better yet, a good cause I’d order myself a Love With Food Box. None of the brands/samples  or size of the samples were sub-par and I’ve certainly been introduced to some new favorites.

Check out Love With Food here, or follow them on Facebook and Twitter!

Have you ever tried a sample subscription service? What did you think of it? If not, would you consider getting a Love With Food Box?

Lovin’ My Influenster Love VoxBox!

I mentioned in a previous post about the abundance of sample subscription services out there. And one of the “boxes” I mentioned was the VoxBox- a program run by Influenster that connects qualifying members to the latest products and brands to hit the market, giving them a chance to try the products and post their own opinions about each individual product they receive in their VoxBox. I loved Influenster the second I heard about them, I feel like it’s a great way to give power back to the actual consumer. So I signed up, earned some badges, and now look at me! I’m doing my first post on my first ever VoxBox! So without further ado, I give you the Love VoxBox!

All my goodies!

In this box I received one Gillette Venus & Olay Razor ($8.99-$10.99), one Kiss Nail Dress- Fashion That Sticks ($6.99), one Stash Tea Herbal Tea Sampler ($3.50), one Ghirardelli Gourmet Creamy Devotion Bar ($2.99), and one Truvia Natural Sweetener 40 ct. box ($3.99). Naturally Ghirardelli’s Creamy Devotion bar was amazing- it was so wonderfully creamy that I made up my mind to buy another the next time I’m in Rite Aid (or any other drugstore). I really love that I received the Stash Tea Herbal Sampler, and that it was caffeine free. I can’t really have too much caffeine so I was really happy that I can actually enjoy teas flavors like Acai Berry, Blueberry Superfruit, Chamomile, Lemon Ginger, Licorice Spice, Mango Passionfruit, Peppermint, and Wild Raspberry Hibiscus minus any caffination. As for the Truvia, it’s an amazing alternative to sugar and I highly recommend it for pretty much anyone, it doesn’t have any awful after-taste, and it great with coffee or fruit.

There were two products in my box that I was extremely skeptical about, which was the Gillette Venus & Olay Razor and the Kiss Nail Dress- Fashion That Sticks nail polish adhesives. I always thought that the razors like the Gillette Venus were simply just a really expensive razor. And then I tried the Gillette & Olay one. Now I cannot say enough about this razor, first of all, it smells amazing. Second of all, the bars of moisturizer located around the razor blades leave your skin smelling, feeling, and looking amazing after shaving. The great thing about this razor is that you don’t need to apply any shaving cream, and the pivoting head of the razor makes it surprisingly easy to get to all those hard to reach areas. So if you’re looking for a really good razor, or hair removal product definitely pick up one of these at your local drugstore (RiteAid, CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart)- it’ll really cut your work in half and leave amazing results behind!

Actually works and looks amazing!

Now I’ve seen these nail “stickers” around for a while in my local Rite Aid, but as of yet I had not purchased any because it seemed pretty ridiculous for anybody to stick a “nail polish” nail on their finger and actually expect it to stay and not look like a first grader playing pretend (I totally stuck stickers on my nails and pretended that I had “real” nails- like fourteen years ago!). So I was super reluctant to try the Kiss Nail Dress- Fashion That Sticks Nail Polish adhesives, especially since I received them in a metallic silver and black crackle style (called camisole) and I have never been too keen on the crackle look. You can imagine my surprise when I actually tried them on and found how easy and gorgeous my nails looked- even with the crackled finish! These are super duper easy to apply, and they leave your nails looking like they were done by a professional- you cannot even tell that they were stick-ons!

All in all, I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to receive this box- I was able to discover new products like the Stash Tea, Venus Razors, and Kiss Nail Dress. Now I not only have new favorites, but I was able to try things that otherwise I would have definitely avoided (the razors, and the nail dress) and now I love them! Thanks influenster for this great opportunity! So if you’re looking for a really great quality razor, bar of chocolate, tea, sugar alternative, or nail product- the products featured in this post (that were in my box) are the way to go!
