Bite Beauty’s Amuse Bouche Collection

Amuse Bouche Bite Beauty Influenster Box

I think I’ve been with Influenster for about four years now, and never have I been so excited to get picked for one of their boxes! I know, I’m easily pleased. The Amuse Bouche collection was released in time for this Spring. Influenster and Bite Beauty sent me three of their lipsticks from the collection, however the complete collection consists of 34 different shades.

Amouse Bouche by Bite BeautyAmouse Bouche Lipstick Colors

What’s special about the Amuse Bouche collection is that they are made from 12 edible oils, which lend them their ultra-creamy hydrating texture. The three shades I received were Gazpacho, Beetroot, and Pepper. Up until I received this box I had never tried anything from Bite Beauty before, I had heard really good things though so my expectations were pretty high. Now having tried these beauties out I can see what all the fuss is about – the pigmentation and staying power of these lipsticks are insane.

Amouse Bouche Lipstick

The formulation is, true to form, very creamy and hydrating. I don’t often use lip liner, but I feel like using a liner – even something like Pixi’s Invisible Smudge Stopper liner – would be a good idea with these. And again, the color payoff here is off the charts, also you won’t need to keep checking the mirror to see if the lipstick is still there, I wore one all day (*sidenote, I didn’t eat much that day) and I only had to reapply once. However if you are having regular meals, I recommend you reapply after eating because these transfer a lot.

Gazpacho was a very Taylor Swift-esc true red with blue undertones. I mean this is your fire engine red, break out the pin curls and victory rolls kind of lipstick. While the Beetroot is a rich berry infused with deep reds, and Pepper is a mid-tone dusty rose with brown undertones. I own quite a lot of pink and dusty rose shades and am a massive fan of that color family, so Pepper was a welcome addition. It’s actually a lot deeper on than you would think. I also loved Gazpacho and Beetroot, unfortunately they didn’t really look right with my skin tone – which was so disappointing to me as they are such great shades. Eh, I guess you can’t win them all – my sister was all too pleased to take those two shades of my hands and every time I see her slide them out of her makeup case I breathe a sigh of regret. Luckily I have Pepper to comfort me, which is a neutral worthy of being worn frequently.

New in Beauty: PIXI Nourishing Lip Polish

I’ve just recently gotten over a nasty cold, and between two weeks of coughing and sniffling and being perpetually in a state of dehydration, my lips have definitely taken a hit. In the midst of all that I have also been recently reviewing Bite Beauty’s new Amuse Bouche collection (catch that post tomorrow!) and I was quickly made aware of the terrible state of my lips – they were really dry and generally in a bad way. Since I’m not much of a DIY girl – I tend to make messes and forget the DIY project in the fridge for months – I immediately went online shopping for a lip scrub. I’m a massive fan of Sugar’s Lip Polish, however, it is rather pricey for a polish and I’d much rather save up my pennies for their body scrub or Soy Face Cleanser, so I was really on the hunt for a more wallet friendly alternative. Well, literally the day after I was doing my online search I was sent PIXI’s new Nourishing Lip Polish! I might have actually squealed when I opened it – it was exactly what I was looking for!

This  2-in-1 lip exfoliator + nourisher helps to repair & protect dry, sensitive lips. A nutrient-rich formula smoothes lips with shea butter & a blend of sweet almond, apricot, and evening primrose oils. The unique massage applicator works to stimulate circulation, giving a healthy, plumped effect.

Right off the bat I’m going to tell you that the PIXI Nourishing Lip Polish is an excellent dupe for fresh’s Sugar Lip Polish – the smell is almost identical, with this one leaning more on the sweet side (an effect of the xylitol, perhaps?). I’m also going to tell you, that although I love fresh’s scrub, I liked PIXI’s version a little better. The Nourishing Lip Polish tube is very reminiscent of all those lip glosses I used to buy back in ‘99, except this tube features a massage applicator that is designed specifically for massaging in product. I feel like this really sets it apart from other scrubs, I love the fact that I don’t have to dip my fingers in a pot which can sometimes feel unhygienic. Also, it feels like my lips are getting a massage which is nice too.

The scent is very citric, likely by way of the grapefruit seed oil, orange peel oil, apricot kernel oil, and cranberry seed oil. The draw for a lot of scrubs is that they feature brown sugar, which acts as a natural exfoliant. There isn’t any mention of brown sugar in the ingredients, but it definitely has a “scrubby” feel to it. Also it’s more wallet friendly than many other scrubs on the market. PIXI has recently been rolling out a plethora of new products, and they’re really hitting the mark, I have a few on my hands that I can’t wait to review, but I definitely recommend picking up one of these if you suffer from dry and slightly feathery (is there a polite way of saying peeling?) lips.

PIXI’s Nourishing Lip Polish retails for $12, pick up at Target or on the Pixi site here.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg Reveals Her Spring Beauty Tips with Zyrtec & Gilt City

My seasonal allergies act as my yearly reminder that spring has indeed sprung. Just a few days after I noticed my persistent sniffling and watery eyes were not a late-winter cold but just the return of my allergies, I was invited to join celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg and actress Jordanna Brewster for a fun event with Gilt City and Zyrtec who have teamed up with Jamie to offer Gilt City shoppers a sweet promo (more on that in a minute). The event was held at the Crosby Street Hotel, which is one of my favorite spots in the city because the penthouse views are seriously gorgeous, take a look!

Allergy Face Event with Jamie Greenberg and Jordanna Brewster hosted by Gilt City and Zyrtec | read more at nyctalon.comAllergy Face Event with Jamie Greenberg and Jordanna Brewster hosted by Gilt City and Zyrtec | read more at nyctalon.com

Jamie’s tips for making sure that allergies don’t get the best of your beauty routine, include avoiding wiggling the wand (which I admit, I do) when you’ve got allergies as it can cause your eyes to water more and leave you with smudges. She also suggests trying out a flat fan brush instead of wand to apply mascara, if all else fails, use disposable mascara wands each time you apply mascara during the allergy season, it’ll help you avoid allergens and other build-up that can occur on reusable wands.

Jamie also recommends applying cool moisturizer, which may help reduce puffiness caused by allergies. Storing your moisturizer in your refrigerator (I store mine in the butter compartment), and before bedtime remove all your makeup with a gentle cleanser and apply the cool cream to your face to soothe and nourish skin overnight.

My favorite bit of new advice was this – very often oils, allergens, and other residue can build up on the surface of our makeup (and even in our cosmetic bags – so clean those regularly too!). To avoid this issue, Jamie suggests laying transparent adhesive tape over the powder to remove straggling debris from the surface. It’s also a good idea to opt for pencils instead of twist-up products, as every time you sharpen you’ll know that you’re starting off with a clean layer of makeup.

While I didn’t arrive early enough to catch Jordanna, I was able to get a gorgeous and Allergy Face friendly look done by Sarah DiGisco from GLAMSQUAD – thanks Sarah!

Now about that promo I mentioned, right now until May 30th, you can score a free Allergy Face beauty bag (RV $19) when you shop Gilt City’s Beauty in Bloom sale and check out with at least one item. The beauty bag features sample sizes of Aveeno Ultra-Calming Nourishing Night Cream, Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss, Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara, as well as an Allergy Sufferers’ Guide to Spring Beauty and a $10 off coupon for Zyrtec, all packaged in a sturdy cosmetic bag as seen here:

The Beauty in Bloom sale has loads of gorgeous accessories as well as some handy beauty supplies. I love shopping on Gilt & Gilt City, and I’ve already got my eye on a pair of amazing shades – they’d be perfect for spring! Also, while you’re checking out the sale, be sure to enter Gilt City & Zyrtec’s The Ultimate Spring Refresh Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip for two to L.A., a makeover by Jamie Greenberg herself, $1ooo in gift cards and more!

New in Beauty: Matrix Style Link Gloss, Hold, & Volume Boosters

Matrix Booster Series

What I first noticed about Matrix’s Style Link collection is that each and every single product smells absolutely amazing. Seriously. The entire Style Link line consists of fourteen products, designed to Prep, Play, Perfect, and Boost your style. While I’m still in the process of using and reviewing some of the Style Link products that Matrix generously sent my way*, I wanted to specifically call out the booster products in this collection. The Matrix Style Link collection features three boosters, Gloss, Hold, and Volume Booster. The genius behind the Booster products is that they can be used alone, or as well as a booster to another product. For instance, you could add a drop of Gloss Booster to the Matrix Smooth Setter or to their hair spray – you could even use it with other brands too. I love that you can really experiment with the intensity of the product and that it lends you more control over how you’re styling your hair. Here’s the low down on each booster:

Matrix Style Link Boosters ReviewMatrix1

Gloss Booster –  Utilize this unique concentrated formula to add serious shine to your ‘do. What makes this a stand-out product is not just that it successfully adds a lovely shine and finish to your locks but that it can also work to soften hold. Use on damp or dry hair.

Hold Booster – A little goes a long way with this Booster. This formula is surprisingly light and non-sticky, and it’s ideal for taming unruly flyaways and keeping your style on lock.

Matrix Volume Booster Style Link Collection

Volume Booster – With a consistency bordering on a serum and a gel, the Matrix Volume Booster delivers amazing volume (especially when paired up with a little Volume Builder Mousse). I recommend it if you’re someone who likes to blow dry your hair after showering – just apply this to towel dry hair before you start styling. Bonus points = this does not leave your hair feeling lightly glued together or leaves your roots feeling gooey.

More information on the Matrix Style Link collection and Boosters can be found here. Each Boost runs about $20 a bottle, but is well worth it considering that a little goes a very long way where these are concerned.

Have you tried any of Matrix’s styling products? What are your favorite hair styling tools? Let me know in the comments below!

*I was not financially compensated for this post. I received a sample for review purposes. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience.*

Birchbox SoHo

My sister and I picked a blisteringly cold day to stop by Birchbox SoHo. We had been planning to drop by since they opened, but bizarrely enough I haven’t really spent much time in SoHo this past year. Anyways, as one of the first customers in the store we could see the entire layout minus the crowds and it was probably one of the most inventive ways of using NYC’s notoriously limited space that I’ve seen. Even though the store itself was really narrow, the set up was so clean that I felt like the place was a massive beauty hideout. I could probably browse in here for hours and not even notice. I don’t know why I thought that was worth mentioning, but I feel like inventive use of space should equal New York City brownie points or something, haha! That or I’ve been watching too much Fixer Upper.

My younger sister has become something of a beauty addict, and we’ve actually been debating adding her own series on here for curly haired gals. Seriously, she will give you the low down in a minute on which curly hair products are even worth looking at. I’m so proud of her (*cries a beauty blogging tear). She’s been dying to build her own Birchbox, which we heard through the blogosphere is one of the highlights of the Birchbox store. The BYOB section is located in the back of the top main floor, there is a lower floor as well where you’ll find more products as well as Birchbox Man. I’ve read that you’re meant to choose one product from each sort of beauty section but we spoke to two sales associates and they said that if you really can’t find something you like in one section then they’ll let you get two of another, no big deal.

Birchbox Soho Building a BoxBirchbox Makeup

A BYOB costs $15, or $16.33 after tax. The entire BYOB section was loaded up with great products, the sample sizes were huge so I felt like the $15 was well worth it (yes, I know that a monthly subscription comes in at only $10 a box, but you get to pick what you want here). They also featured a free item – that week it was travel sized Illume candles, my sister and I love Illume so we were thrilled about that addition! The customer service was also great too, the staff there can help you find any sort of product that you’re looking for, but they don’t hover, aren’t pushy at all, and just leave you to do your own thing if you like.

Build Your Own Birchbox NYC Talon

She picked out Wilma Schumann Skin Care Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads, DevaCurl Super Cream, Briogeo Curl Charisma Leave-in Cream, Ayres Body Polish – Pampas Sunrise, Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Indigo, and the Illume Gardenia tin candle.

Birchbox Soho Services

Birchbox SoHo also offers a menu of beauty services including makeup, nails, and hair – which you can book online here. They also offer beauty classes, which are free for subscribers, and $30 for non-subscribers – however, you get that amount of money in store credit when you take the course, so it’s basically like getting it free with a $30 purchase.

Embracing More Brilliant Hair with John Frieda’s Colour Care Line at Target

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #RethinkColour #CollectiveBias

I sometimes refer to my hair as my perpetual beauty project. I’ve always been more than willing to try all sorts of hair color trends, and boy have I had some pretty interesting hair looks. More recently I’ve settled into a light brown, which blends well with my natural red undertones. I also had highlights added in so that I could lighten the color without committing fully to a full new shade. I’ve loved the look so far, only I noticed about two weeks ago that my light highlights were getting duller and blending into my brown hair more than I like. So naturally, doing what any girl does when faced with a beauty crisis and in need of a quick fix, I headed to Target!

How to Lighten Brunette Hair at Home

The Target beauty aisles are my happy place, but this time I zipped past the mascaras, foundations, highlighters, and eyeliners and headed straight for the haircare. Target has these handy displays featuring John Frieda’s New Colour Care line, the Colour Care line features three sets of hair care – Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter or Visibly Deeper and Sheer Blonde Go Blonder. Seeing as how I’m a brunette wanting to go brighter, I chose the Visibly Brighter collection. Also, right now when you buy 3 of John Frieda’s Colour Care products you get a $5 Target gift card – score! This totally means more money for all those tchotkes that end up in our carts, haha!

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Brighter LineJohn Frieda Brilliant Brunette Conditioner

I’ve actually been a John Frieda fan since I was in high school, for me it’s always been one of those brands that I’ve always associated with hard core high quality hair care. In terms of the Colour Care line, I love the stylish simplicity of the packaging, but it’s the product inside the bottle that always delivers and never fails to impress. So I had pretty high expectations when a little more than a week ago I started using the Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ Subtle Lightening Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as the Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ In-Shower Treatment in my needy locks. Since then I’ve already noticed my hair looking glossier and lighter! I mean, I don’t consider myself a vain person, but guys I’m kind of really pleased with how my hair is starting to look – in real life it’s a nice multifaceted light brunette color which is brought together by my rejuvenated highlights.

how to lighten your hairJohn Frieda Hair Color

The Brilliant Brunette® Visibly Brighter™ line is meant to gradually brighten your hair, illuminating glowing tones and giving your hair that sort of sun-kissed back-from-vacation glow. The in-shower treatment, which is a totally new product from John Frieda, is designed to instantly lighten your hair – even up to one shade! The best part about it though, is that it only lightens your natural spectrum, that way your hair won’t appear bleached or orange, and yes it’s safe for both natural or colour-treated brunettes. I think I’m most impressed with the in-shower treatment. It’s instantly effective, I saw the difference in my hair after one use. I feel like the Visibly Brighter line has really allowed me to play with an even lighter tone without committing to hours of color treatments, and that is something I can totally get behind! You know when you get so excited about a product that you just want to hug it, well, those are the feelings I have toward this one. It’s serious, you guys.

New in Beauty: butter LONDON ShadowClutch & Wardrobe Duos

There’s nothing more exciting to me than when a brand I know and love comes out with a new and innovative beauty product. This year butter LONDON has released a new addition to their cosmetic line – the butter LONDON ShadowClutch. This gem actually ended up on my desk some while ago, and I haven’t really had a chance to try it until recently. It’s a customizable clutch designed to display butter LONDON’s new range of eyeshadows – and in my opinion it’s a perfect travel companion, and certainly a great gift for the holidays.

butter LONDON Shadow Clutch Review | read more at nyctalon.com

Butter LONDON has formulated their eyeshadows to be infused with primer, oil-absorbing, and skin balancing, with plenty of color payoff. Having been a favorite polish brand of nail artists and beauty junkies everywhere, it’s obvious that butter LONDON knows what they’re doing in terms of color. What really makes this palette stand out from the rest is the size, the convenience, and the innovative design that allows you to slide out eyeshadows, and replace them with new ones without disturbing the look of the clutch and with complete control and stability. The clutch really is a perfect size for traveling, taking on-the-go, or just using at home. A lot of build-it-yourself palette’s tend to be bulky, this one is not.

butter LONDON Shadow Clutch Review | read more at nyctalon.com

I was sent the Natural Charm ShadowClutch to test out. Now,  I have plenty of natural/neutral palettes so I don’t need another one – but this one is not your standard neutral. The eyeshadows included are Linen (a matte vanilla), Quartz (a warm beige sheen), Camo (a dark khaki sheen), Camel (matte nude), Citrine (coral sheen), and Leather (matte chocolate brown). I was completely enraptured with how smooth the formula is, and how much I loved the colors – I definitely appreciate the Camel and Citrine, two colors I haven’t yet seen in a neutral palette, but are both so gorgeous and easy to use.

butter LONDON Shadow Clutch Review | read more at nyctalon.com

I was also sent two Wardrobe Duos – eyeshadow pieces that are sold in twos and designed to fit in the palette – in Moody Blues and Fancy Flutter. The Moody Blues duo features shades Sequins (soft mint green sheen), and Sapphire (a navy blue sheen). Fancy Flutter features Feather (a beige sheen), and my favorite new color of the year, Plume – a multidimensional chameleon sheen that I seriously cannot get enough of.

butter LONDON Shadow Clutch Review | read more at nyctalon.com

The butter LONDON ShadowClutch only costs $39, and each Wardrobe Duo clocks in at $15. This means that each shadow in the clutch clocks in at around $6.50 each, and $7.50 each for the Wardrobe Duo – which is a real steal as most custom palette’s cost quite a bundle and some don’t even include eyeshadows with the cost of the palette. Plus the eyeshadows themselves are up there in terms of quality with much more expensive brands, and cost as little as some drugstore eyeshadows. Honestly, I’m kicking myself for not seizing on the clutch sooner – it’s definitely one of the more exciting pieces that I’ve seen this year.

You can pick up the clutch and check out other shades from butter LONDON here. So ladies, what do you think? Do you like the butter LONDON ShadowClutch? Do you know anyone who’d love to get their hands on one?

Best in Beauty: Redken Glow Dry Diamond Oil

The packaging for Redken’s Glow Dry Diamon Oil is insane, and I can’t get enough of it! To be honest, I was initially rather worried about this product – being in the beauty game for a while now, we all know that sometimes stellar packaging is there to make up for lackluster product. However, I was pleased (*cough* thrilled) to find that’s definitely not the case with this beauty.

Redken Dry Oil

So about that packaging, Redken actually offers quite a few dry oils including the Shatterproof Shine – which is a golden bottle, and Shatterproof Shine Intense – which is a sleeker grey/black bottle, and of course this one, which is in a pink bottle. They’re all great examples of packaging done right. I love how it actually looks like the bottle has facets of a diamond. It is heavy glass, so I would recommend you pop this is a smaller container or buy the travel size at Ulta ($10) if you’re traveling and leave this one on your vanity at home.

Redken Diamond OilRedken Glow Dry Oil

The thing about hair oils is that you don’t know how much you “need” it until you try it. What I mean is that we go through all this effort to heat style our hair, and using a diamond oil makes all the effort even more worth it. This dry oil is meant to decrease blow-dry time, and increase shine – without the grease and stickiness and definitely minus the oily look. You apply prior to styling, although I also use this oil on my hair when I get out of the shower even when I don’t plan on styling with heat – it really keeps frizzy hair tamed.

Redken Glow Dry Diamond Oil

The oil relies on heat-responsive silicone technology to deliver lightweight protection and shine – which makes it the first of its kind. Every girl in my family has a different hair texture – so this was tried on hair that is extremely curly to wavy/straight and all of us came to the same conclusion – that it’s really effective. Personally, I loved how soft my hair felt and the oil does not leave any weird residual smell (like some hair oils tend to do) and you can definitely see that there is a good healthy shine going on after you’ve used this. And while this is in the pricier range in terms of haircare, you only need the tiniest bit so the bottle will last you a while (even if, like me, you have sisters pilfering your beauty stash). Also, after hearing me rave about this oil on instagram, my friend Rosemary of NYC Style, and a Little Cannoli picked up some of her own while in NYC the other weekend and I literally thought she had stopped by a salon overnight her hair looked so perfect!

You can find out more about Redken Glow Dry Diamond Oil here, (ARV $24-32).

Keep Your Skin Radiant this Fall with St.Ive’s

Now that temperatures have begun to creep downward, I’ve been reaching for the lotion bottle more frequently. And as I’ve gotten older I’ve becoming more and more aware of what it is that I put on my skin. I’m constantly on the lookout for natural skincare that won’t irritate my sensitive skin – which can be tricky during colder months where my skin fairly soaks up moisturizers. So when St.Ives asked me to test out their new Refresh & Revive Pear Nectar & Soy Body Lotion and body wash, I said of course!

St.Ives happens to be one of my favorite drugstore brands. Not only are they super affordable, but they always work well, and have the best scents. The Refresh & Revive Pear Nectar & Soy Body Lotion is no exception to that – it smells so good! I love the smell of pear (and the fruit itself) so it definitely was not a hard sell for me, haha!

Both body wash and lotion are formulated to rejuvenate skin. They’re made with natural moisturizers, including pear extract and soy, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin like mine. It actually smells so good that everyone in my family have been working their way through the bottle I was sent – you can’t help but lather this lotion on. I’m not quite ready to ditch my summer shorts and skirts now that my skin has been feeling so great, soft, and moisturized!

I keep mine by the couch, mostly because I like the idea of moisturizing while doing other things like watching a movie or having a cup of tea and a chat. I figured out the best way to make skin care a habit is by not adding it to my “to-do” list but rather make it something that occurs effortlessly and frequently – and I do that by keeping moisturizers I love, like this St.Ives Pear Nectar & Soy one, around my home. It also has really pretty packaging, so that’s a plus too!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of St. Ives. The opinions and text are all mine.

Fall Beauty Must-Haves from PIXI by Petra

There are some products that I don’t discover their full potential until I’m in a real bind. A couple of weeks ago I was running late for an event, five minutes from being too late to catch the bus, with my makeup unfinished and full of last minute anxiety, I grabbed a couple of items from my makeup case and made a dash for it. Sitting on the bus (taking deep calming breaths) – I started to put on my makeup, and alas I had not grabbed my handy little brow kit but I did grab the PIXI Endless Brow Gel Pen which I had never used before.

Pixi Endless Brow Gel Pen Review

Luckily for me the Endless Brow Pen is exactly what a girl with misbehaving brows needs. Seriously, my brows are the riddle I can never solve – they’re thin (thank you tweezers and 90s brow trends) but can also poke up in odd directions. This pen goes on soft, fills in perfectly, but finishes solid so brows will not budge. At all. Well done PIXI! I’m so glad I finally gave this one a go – and since that fateful bus ride, I’ve been using this pretty much exclusively. Yes, I know, not having tidy eyebrows isn’t the most tragic thing to occur, but sometimes you do want to feel like you look your best – especially when you’re rushed and slightly frazzled. And this handy pen definitely helped in that particular arena.

Pixi by Petra Beauty

I also got my mitts on two of their gorgeous Mattelustre lipsticks, in Plum Berry and Pure Fuchsia. They’re so pretty! You can wear them either as a matte lipstick or a satin finish one – to wear as matte, you just blot lightly with a napkin after application. The colors look dramatic in the tube but look more conservative on the lips – which I love.

Pixi by Petra Mattelustre Lipstick ReviewPIXI by Petra Lipstick

I also was sent their Cat Eye Ink which I’m devastated about as I’ve lost mine (cue internal weeping) – this sturdy felt tip eyeliner is fool proof! If you’ve not mastered the classic cat eye flick then worry not – all you have to do is run this along the base of your lashes and tilt the pen right at the end. The shape is perfectly designed for achieving this classic look.

Pixi Cat Eye Ink Review

I know I’ve spent hours poking through the Pixi products in Target, so it was so great to get my hands on these beauties! And if you haven’t heard, for the past couple of months Pixi has been selling their cult-favorite Glow Tonic in a convenient travel sized in Target! That means no more waiting by the door for the mailman, now, we can just pick it up ourselves (which is great as I pretty much spend half my life in Target anyways)!
